The Chicago Sky already have a prominent duo of post players in Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso. However, they entered the offseason needing massive upgrades to their backcourt.
General manager Jeff Pagliocca got the ball rolling by signing veteran point guard Courtney Vandersloot, and he continued by trading draft capital for Ariel Atkins, another experienced guard.
To put a bow on things, Pagliocca selected TCU guard Hailey Van Lith in the first round of the 2025 WNBA Draft. Not only was she a highly decorated player for three different programs in college, but she played with Reese for a season at LSU.
Van Lith shocked many by making the final Chicago Sky this year roster despite being picked late in the first round. She put together a solid preseason, including an eight-point performance against the Minnesota Lynx.
The WNBA general managers get together each year for a survey on the league before the season begins. The results of that survey were published on Thursday, just one day prior to opening night.
According to the league's front offices, Van Lith is considered one of the biggest draft steals this year considering where she was selected.
She was not considered the biggest steal, however, as that title was shared between the Storm's Dominique Malonga, the Aces' Aaliyah Nye and the Fever's Makayla Timpson.
However, Van Lith was an honorable mention alongside Sarah Ashlee Barker from the Sparks, Anastasiia Kosu from the Lynx and Aziaha James from the Wings.
Van Lith will have an opportunity to prove these general managers right when she takes the floor for the first time on May 17. The Sky will take on Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever in their first game, which will take place at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana.
It is currently unknown what kind of role Van Lith will play early in her career, but she should be a solid bench piece behind Vandersloot and Atkins.
