“I haven’t had a lot of conversations with her recently.” A cold and direct response coming from Indiana Fever Coach Stephanie White when asked about rumours flying around about DeWanna Bonner’s situation and her apparent request out the door and into a new future.
“Really focused on the team we have right here and what we need to do to position ourselves to win,” White said.
DeWanna Bonner hasn’t exactly been a key contributor to the Indiana outfit since joining. The 2-time WNBA champion’s first three games haven’t exactly been at par with the prestige that her achievements carried. Scoring just one point in her last 2 starting games before being demoted to warming the bench and sparingly used, the 2009 WNBA 1st-round, 5th overall pick star is now a shadow of her former self.
On June 11, DeWanna Bonner stepped away for personal reasons. But as of late, she has shown no intention of returning and has gone to the lengths of picking her next destination. At the moment, she’s got her eyes on Phoenix or Atlanta.
While it is yet to be seen if DeWanna Bonner can get back to her game-winning self, it is a certainty that the path to glory through Indiana Fever has closed its gates for the decorated WNBA veteran.
With one chapter closed, another one opens. DeWanna Bonner’s search for home could take her anywhere, but currently, two teams are at the forefront: Phoenix Mercury and Atlanta Dream.
The Dream is in the process of building something great. With young players bolstering the explosiveness and physicality, they all have but one weakness–closing out the game. DeWanna Bonner’s well-built experience playing for championship teams and a list of other great contenders would be a welcome sight to a youthful side hungry for experience.
About 1,500 miles away is DeWanna Bonner’s original home team, the Phoenix Mercury. A homecoming angle is another welcome sight for the veteran with two decades of dominance, well, almost.
Bonner’s fiancée, Alyssa Thomas, couldn’t have said it better.
“She spoke so highly of this organization,” Thomas said. “She spent 10 years here. She knows so much about the area”
Thomas added, “She speaks so highly of the fanbase and all the people here.” A testament to DeWanna Bonner’s connection with the place, the people, and of course the team.
Where DeWanna goes is still up in the air. But as long as there’s a fire to end her legacy on a high, the opportunity will always be within reach.
