Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever made headlines again on Wednesday, but it was not for the right reasons. As the basketball world continues to wait for the reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year’s return from an extended injury absence, which now extends to 13 straight games, reports of a new injury suddenly surfaced.
Technically, the issue is not new. According to Fever reporter Scott Agness, Clark sustained an ankle injury on August 7. However, it was only on Wednesday that it was reported. It has been described as a “very mild” bone bruise on the 23-year-old’s left ankle.
Fellow Fever reporter Chloe Peterson later confirmed Agness’s report. Peterson, however, also reported that the injury is not expected to impact Clark’s timeline for her return from the groin issue that has kept her out for more than a month now.
In a succeeding report, Peterson revealed that the Fever have issued a statement on Clark’s ankle issue in an attempt to shed light on the matter at hand.
“There was no timeline or projected return to play so it’s impossible to say if it was impacted,” a Fever spokesperson said, per Peterson. “So it remains the same: to give Caitlin as much time as needed to ensure she comes back fully healthy, which everyday she is working hard to do.”
This statement confirms Clark’s ankle injury. However, it does not explicitly state that the ankle issue has not impacted the two-time All-Star’s return to the court. Instead, the statement indicates that “it’s impossible to say” the same, which leaves it open to interpretation.
Either way, Clark still has no clear timetable for her return. The Fever hope to get her back before the playoffs, but this previously unreported ankle injury could prove to be a bump in her road to recovery.
