Kelsey Mitchell has established herself as the Indiana Fever’s top scorer this season. The nine-year veteran was drafted with the second overall pick in the 2018 WNBA Draft. She has continued to improve throughout her career and is now in the midst of arguably her best campaign.
Mitchell is currently averaging 25.0 points per game on 51.3% shooting, with 3.0 triples on a 45.5% clip, all of which are career-high marks. The 5-foot-8 guard is the second-leading scorer in the whole league, trailing only reigning WNBA MVP A’ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces.
The WNBA is currently on an extended hiatus to give way to the ongoing FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup. Mitchell’s Fever teammates, Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston, are both in Berlin, Germany, representing Team USA, along with coach Stephanie White.
Mitchell was not selected for the USA’s World Cup contingent. USA Basketball chose players who took part in the basketball camps leading up to the World Cup. Mitchell opted not to attend the camps as she continues to pursue a PhD at Liberty University.
Amid the break, the four-time WNBA All-Star led the Fever’s initiative to support Indiana’s first responders. The team took to social media to share the update.
“showing our appreciation to the first responders in our community ” the Fever’s caption read.
“Kelsey Mitchell together with @weshare_health surprised members of a local dispatch team with a meal and Fever swag to thank them for all that they do ”
The team shared some photos from the Sept. 9 event. Mitchell helped honor 40 Metropolitan Emergency Services Agency dispatchers. They were treated to a fresh meal courtesy of St. Elmo’s Steak House. The first responders also received Fever merchandise, including signed jerseys from Mitchell.
As for the rest of the WNBA season, Indiana has four games remaining on the schedule. They have a 26-14 record and are ranked fifth in the standings. The Fever can still finish as high as second heading into the playoffs.
