Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham, who averaged 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.0 steal per game in 2025, is currently recovering from a knee injury she sustained last August.
Cunningham played just 30 games for Indiana in 2025 after her season ended due to a knee injury. She tore her right MCL during a game last August and underwent surgery to address the issue.
Now, amid the WNBA offseason, the 29-year-old guard is undergoing rehab in preparation for the 2026 season. On Saturday, she also shared an update revealing that she's now running on a treadmill — a clear sign of her progress.
One unfortunate setback from Cunningham's injury, however, is that it will prevent her from participating in a marathon that she had been eyeing.
In the latest episode of her "Show Me Something" podcast with her good friend West Wilson, Cunningham talked about a marathon in Honolulu, Hawaii that a friend invited her to. Since she can't make it this year due to her injury, she revealed her plan to participate in it next year.
"There's like a Honolulu marathon every year around December, and Hawaii is my happy place, so I was like, 'Heck yeah,'" Cunningham said about the marathon. "But my leg is not ready for it this year. So, I'm actually doing a full marathon next year and I'm trying to get Lindsey, my sister, to do it, too."
Since a WNBA regular season usually ends in September and the playoffs in October, Cunningham won't have much time to prepare for the marathon. Nonetheless, that's also why the veteran sharpshooter believes she'll be in good condition to run.
"This is why I think I'm going to be able to do it because I'm going to be right out of season. So I'm already going to be in really great shape, and then it's Hawaii," Cunningham explained.
"So if I get tired or whatever, I'm just going to walk and look at the ocean and look at the mountains. Like I'll be fine. I'm not gonna run the whole thing."
It will certainly be interesting to see how Cunningham fares once she runs the marathon. For now, though, her focus is on recovering.
Cunningham will also have to figure out her next team, since she's a free agent and her return to the Fever remains uncertain.
