Indiana Fever's Sophie Cunningham Describes Latest Treatment as 'Brutal'

Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham played 30 games during the 2025 regular season and averaged 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.0 steal. She started in 13 games, establishing herself as a key contributor and defensive presence for the team.

Unfortunately, Cunningham's season ended prematurely after she suffered a knee injury during an August game against the Connecticut Sun. The 29-year-old WNBA vet tore her right MCL, forcing her to undergo surgery and miss the rest of the campaign and the playoffs.

With Cunningham injured, she could only watch from the sidelines amid the WNBA postseason.

On Saturday, Cunningham provided an update on her recovery from the injury. She shared a short video showing her right leg as she underwent electroacupuncture.

What stood out from her post was her caption, as she wrote, "brutal."

According to WebMD, "Electroacupuncture helps to block your pain by activating bioactive chemicals in your body. This process may decrease your sensitivity to the pain you’re feeling. It’s also been shown to help reduce inflammation in your body."

While electroacupuncture is generally not painful, Cunningham may have felt frustrated about having to go through multiple treatments during her rehab instead of contributing to the Fever’s playoff push.

For what it's worth, in the latest episode of her "Show Me Something" podcast, she admitted that she "would much rather be playing than having to sit on the sidelines and not do anything, because it is stressful."

For now, though, Cunningham can only be patient and cheer for her team as the Fever continue their postseason run.
