Seattle Storm star point guard Skylar Diggins broke her silence on the recent rumors generated by the sudden drop in her last name.

During the Seattle Storm’s media day, Skylar Diggins clarified that she has officially dropped the “Smith” in her name and has requested to be referred to without it moving forward. Thus, she now goes by simply Skylar Diggins, and no longer Skylar Diggins-Smith.

“Yes. Thank you for the question, too,” Diggins responded to a reporter who asked for clarification on the change in her name. “Yes, it does say Skylar Diggins, and I would like to be addressed as that moving forward.

“Thank you guys so much, and as always, my focus is on being a great teammate, adding value to this team on and off the floor and in this community, and as always, being a good mom to my two babies,” Diggins continued.

“It won’t change for none of y’all anyways, you know what I’m saying?” she added with a smile. “Some of y’all just call me whatever y’all want to call me anyways.”

More than the topic of her name change, which she also meticulously implemented on her social media, Diggins talked about the new roster that the Storm would take into the 2025 WNBA season.

“This is definitely the most talented roster I’ve been a part of in my 13 years—11 on the floor,” she said in the same media event. “So yeah, I’m really excited to get everybody here. Everybody looks really good. The vibes been really good. We had two great first days of camp. It’s been really good.”

During the 2024 WNBA offseason, the Seattle Storm made several significant moves to reshape their roster and prepare for the upcoming season. The most notable transaction was the trade of star guard Jewell Loyd in a blockbuster three-team deal, which sent her to the Las Vegas Aces while Seattle acquired the second overall pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft along with additional assets.

Why Did Skylar Diggins Change Her Name?

Skylar Diggins, formerly known as Skylar Diggins-Smith, recently decided to drop her husband’s last name and now prefers to be referred to simply as Skylar Diggins.

While Diggins has not publicly explained the reason behind the change, fans have speculated whether it is a personal decision, a feminist statement, or a sign of marital changes. Some have noted that she also removed most of her Instagram posts, including pictures of her husband, Daniel Smith, further fueling speculation.

However, there has been no official confirmation of any separation, and Skylar Diggins remains focused on her WNBA career with the Seattle Storm.
