With their star-studded roster and height advantage, the New York Liberty is sitting on a comfortable 3-1 record. But even so, head coach Chris DeMarco revealed an aspect that needs to be worked on.
Previous coach Sandy Brondello’s exit was followed by major changes in the Liberty’s offense, ball movement and off-ball play. But trying to work this “completely different” style, DeMarco explained what areas need work.
“It’s a new team, and we have to get used to playing with each other,” the new coach stated recently. “What we can do as a staff and players, it’s continuing to have the right spacing and understanding if defense takes something away, it means something else is open.”

The stat lines showed the results. Against the Portland Fire on May 14, the Liberty secured a 100-82 victory with Breanna Stewart posting 22 points, 7 rebounds and Pauline Astier going for 20 points and 3 rebounds.
But that’s just half the work. The new team is already learning how to create more opportunities for each other and reduce turnover issues. But the learning isn’t done yet, as the team will need to be consistent with it.
The true success of DeMarco’s approach will unfold as the season progresses. But for the time being, he has earned the trust of Liberty star, Sabrina Ionescu.
An ankle injury is set to keep the Liberty Guard out for at least 2 weeks. However, talking about DeMarco and the coaching staff’s approach during the preseason, Ionescu voiced out her support.
“As a player, if you understand, like, ‘I’m doing this because it’s creating a shot for my teammate,’ you better be doing it to the fullest of your ability because you have to for the team,” she said. “And so, there’s a why to everything, no matter what it is we’re doing.”
Whenever she returns, Ionescu will be following DeMarco’s lead. The goal is to play selflessly, win the games and as the coach said, “grow together.”
