Kate Martin and the Chicago Sky did not have the 2026 WNBA season they were hoping for, finishing the regular season with a 16-28 record and missing out on the playoffs once again. Now, Martin sees her one-year development contract with the Sky come to an end, becoming a free agent ahead of the 2027 WNBA season.

While Martin has been a fan favorite since joining the WNBA in 2024, she hasn’t been able to find a consistent home over her first three seasons. She began her career with the Las Vegas Aces before being selected by the Golden State Valkyries in the 2025 expansion draft. And in 2026, she bounced around the league some more, playing 17 games with the Los Angeles Sparks before joining the Sky.

But during last offseason, Martin still spent time on the basketball court, joining the 3-on-3 Unrivaled league in Miami, which was founded by New York Liberty forward Breanna Stewart and Minnesota Lynx forward Napheesa Collier.

Martin played in 13 games for Breeze BC in season two of Unrivaled, averaging 6.0 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 10.4 minutes per game. And in August, the former Iowa Hawkeyes guard signed a multi-year deal with Unrivaled, setting her up to return for season three, which begins in January.

But on Wednesday, it was revealed that Martin and Unrivaled have mutually agreed to terminate her contract, and she will no longer be participating in the event to begin 2027.

“While I’m excited about what’s on the horizon for me, I’m so thankful for the people, the competition, and the memories I’ve made in Unrivaled,” Martin said.

In addition, Indiana Fever forward Aliyah Boston will also miss season three of Unrivaled after undergoing surgery. To replace both Martin and Boston, Unrivaled signed both Toronto Tempo forward Isabelle Harrison and Valkyries guard Kaitlyn Chen to one-year deals.

“Updates from Unrivaled: Aliyah Boston will miss the 2027 season after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on her right knee,” ESPN’s Kareem Copeland wrote on X. “The league and Kate Martin have reached a ‘mutual contract termination agreement.’ The league has signed Isabelle Harrison and Kaitlyn Chen to 1-year deals.”

Unrivaled season three is set to begin on January 8, opening the new season in Boston.
