After dropping the first game of their inaugural WNBA season, Kate Martin and the Golden State Valkyries were able to secure the first win in franchise history in Game 2.
On Wednesday night, the Valkyries defeated Brittney Sykes and the Washington Mystics 76-74 in front of a sold-out crowd at Chase Center.
Martin finished the night with zero points on 0-of-2 shooting, three rebounds, and one block in just nine minutes off the bench.
Through two regular-season games, Martin’s box scores have been underwhelming. After scoring eight points in her only preseason appearance, she has yet to make a basket in the regular season, going 0-for-5 from the field and 0-for-3 from beyond the arc.
Her only two points of the regular season came in the opening loss to the Los Angeles Sparks, where she played 21 minutes as a starter and made both of her free throw attempts.
While Martin has struggled with her shooting, she’s also been dealing with a right-hand injury, the same hand she shoots with. This issue kept her out of the preseason finale and could be affecting her performance.
The Valkyries status report has a few names on it for tomorrow’s game against Phoenix:

Kate Martin (right hand) — OUT
Cecilia Zandalasini (right foot) — OUT
Stephanie Talbot (right quad) — OUT
Laeticia Amihere (right hip) — QUESTIONABLE
Still, WNBA fans are not happy with Martin's play through two games, taking to social media to leave their thoughts.
"What does Kate Martin even do for the Valkyries. She literally only scored 2 pts last game and 1 assist in 21 minutes played," one fan said.
"This is exactly what I’m talking about…. Kate Martin has a roster spot from cc clout but you’re telling me Grace Berger isn’t on a team pleaseeeeee," added another.
"Kate Martin hasn’t been doing (expletive) in any of these games yet," wrote a third.
"Kate Martin needs to work on her shooting outside of games and practices, like putting in extra reps on her own time," commented a fourth.
"When is kate martin going to find her rhythm," asked a fifth.
"kate martin is not good. no way she has a spot over harmoni and deja," posted a sixth.
The former Iowa Hawkeyes star still has 42 games remaining this year to "find her rhythm." Up next for Golden State is a rematch with the Sparks on Friday.
