The Indiana Fever’s star guard Kelsey Mitchell is hitting free agency this offseason after coming off one of the best WNBA seasons in her career. She has been very vocal in recent days about her situation with Indiana, and it’s her time, as she calls it, “selfish”, to possibly move on to another team. Mitchell and the Fever could part ways next season after her one-year $ 1.4-million contract comes to an end. Will she move on or stay with the Indiana Fever?

Indiana Fever Guard Kelsey Mitchell Weighs In On Free Agency

Mitchell averaged a career-high 24.7 points per game in 2026 and shot a career-best 45% from the three-point line. She has averaged 18.4 points per game in eight seasons with the Indiana Fever. She and Clark also averaged 47 points per game combined, the best duo in WNBA history. She is coming off her best season because of her chemistry with Clark.

The Indiana Fever made the playoffs as a sixth seed with a record of 28-16 and lost in three games to the Las Vegas Aces in the first round of the playoffs this season. The Fever also lost to the Aces in the Semifinals. They cannot seem to get over the hump in the playoffs, even with all the talent they have, to make it to the Finals. Mitchell, however, might be looking for a team that can win a championship.

As Mitchell hits the free-agent market, it will be her first time ever testing the waters, since she has never played with another team in her career. Is it good for her to leave Indiana and leave Clark? After all, she has had one of the best seasons of her career, breaking multiple WNBA records because of the chemistry she and Clark possess.

The Grass Isn’t Always Greener

Mitchell had voiced that it has not been easy playing for the Indiana Fever because of all the noise that surrounds Clark. Clark’s fame, as well as the reputation of the Fever, took away from the game of basketball. She called it: Indiana gets a lot of “flak”.

Minnesota Lynx Courtney Williams had something to say about Mitchell hitting the free agency market. She said, “The grass isn’t always greener.” Williams herself has played for six WNBA teams in her 11 seasons. Williams also added that Mitchell had the best season of her career when Clark showed up to the Fever.

“I get that it comes with a lot of (expletive). You had one of your best years, and they’re going to give you a bag. You all down there holding their franchise together.”

End Of My Mitchell Rant

If Mitchell decides to leave the Indiana Fever and Clark, that would be a huge blow to the team and their franchise. The Fever have one of the best trios in the WNBA: Mitchell, Clark, and Aliyah Boston.

One of the best teams that could afford Mitchell is the Washington Mystics. They are a young team, and they would have to pay a pretty penny for the star guard.

As for Mitchell, she needs to figure out what is in her best interest: staying in Indiana or moving on to a new chapter with a different team trying to chase a championship. The Fever fans would love their guard to stay. The rest of the sporting world would too, because what she has done with the Fever is special.

Maybe the team just needs a coaching change? There have been reports that the Fever have reached out to Dawn Stanley and Kara Lawson.
