INDIANAPOLIS — The Phoenix Mercury let a double-digit first-quarter lead slip away in a 107–101 loss to the Indiana Fever on Wednesday night.

Tough Turnovers

Phoenix started the game strong on both ends of the ball. They scored 30 points in the first quarter, going on a 12-point run against the Fever. Indiana answered with a 12-point run of its own in the second quarter for the lead, forcing eight turnovers against Phoenix.

The Fever continued to move through the Mercury’s defense to start the second quarter. Phoenix made 22 points in the third quarter to cut the deficit to two. However, Indiana took advantage of free throw attempts – making 32 out of 38 attempts – to break into triple digits.

This is the first time Phoenix has allowed 100 or more points in a game this season.

Alyssa Thomas once again led scoring for Phoenix with 32 points, 15 rebounds and seven assists.

Fever’s Defense

Phoenix had 19 turnovers against Indiana, a rarity for the team. While the Mercury were able to create enough offense to make it close, the number of turnovers gave the Fever momentum throughout the game.

According to Phoenix’s post-game notes, head coach Nate Tibbetts acknowledged the importance of the turnovers and how they affected the game.

“Nineteen turnovers is the most turnovers we’ve had in a while,” he said. “Some of them were unforced… And you know, that when you turn the ball over in a game like this, those possessions are very valuable.”

On To The Next

The Phoenix Mercury will now head to Georgia to face the Atlanta Dream on Friday, Aug. 1.
