Mercury uses Finals spotlight to invest in future athletes

“The Phoenix Mercury have always been dedicated to uplifting our community, and it was important that our WNBA Finals run left a lasting impact throughout Arizona,” said owner Mat Ishbia in a press release. “These community initiatives will continue to grow the game of basketball across the state and inspire the next generation of Mercury fans.”

The team, along with the Phoenix Suns/Phoenix Mercury Foundation, will invest in the expansion of the Jr. Mercury Legacy League and two gym renovation projects. One will be in Tucson, in partnership with the YMCA of Southern Arizona, and another at the Grant Recreation Center in downtown Phoenix.

This will be the first time a WNBA franchise makes a six-figure commitment to its community in honor of its Finals appearance.

The Legacy League was first launched in 2024 during the WNBA All-Star weekend in Phoenix. The league has grown rapidly, going from 80 players to over 3,360 throughout the state. With the expansion into Tucson, the number of athletes is set to increase.

The restoration of Grant Recreation Center in downtown Phoenix will also provide local athletes with the same opportunities. The Grant Park Youth Barrio Project, which manages the space, offers educational, cultural and athletic programs for at-risk youth in south Phoenix.

Phoenix doesn’t want its Finals appearance to be just about a championship. The team is using its platform to give back to the community and beyond. The investment creates opportunities for girls who aspire to be like the players they see on TV, providing a safe environment to develop their skills.

The commitment also extends beyond basketball, as partnering with the Barrio Project, which provides resources to youth who need them most, underscores Phoenix’s dedication to supporting programs that serve the community’s younger members. The team’s vision extends beyond the court, a testament to giving back and addressing other needs.

While Phoenix is focused on winning its fourth championship, the team hasn’t forgotten those who aspire to follow in its footsteps.

The Phoenix Mercury and the Las Vegas Aces play Game 3 of the WNBA Finals on Wednesday, Oct. 8, at 5 p.m.
