Caitlin Clark came into the WNBA with millions of followers in tow. Most of them were enthralled by the exciting brand of basketball she brought to the game. Along with that, her competitive demeanor on the court resonated well with fans.
Not everyone was happy about the fame she was enjoying. WNBA players, both past and present, were apparently jealous of Clark’s millions of fans. Even though they tried to deny any such thing existed, their words and actions said otherwise.
When players finally received chartered planes, they did not appreciate that all the credit went to a rookie who had not bounced a ball on a WNBA court. Some suggested sellout games were already in the works, and Clark was not the sole player responsible.
However, as time passed by, the hits and bumps started to become evidently an act of jealousy. The most popular of them, was when Chennedy Carter body slammed the Indiana Fever guard to the ground.
Nothing much was made of it, especially from the league’s point of view. But NBA players, analysts, and celebrities wanted the league to take action. Michael Jordan‘s longtime agent, David Falk, while talking about Clark’s influence, referred to that incident.
I’d suspend that girl for five games…I think that was really, really poorly handled…That would never happen in the NBA. That would never happen in the NBA if a fringe player fouled Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan or LeBron James, or Stephen Curry, they would be suspended.

Falk added that the WNBA commissioner, Cathy Engelbert, was asleep while all of this happened. He believes she should have made an example out of Carter, to make it clear, that Caitlin Clark was the league’s cash cow.
While speaking on The Kevin Sheehan Show, David Falk recalled how such reactions to Caitlin Clark are similar to what Michael Jordan faced as a young player. He believes Cathy Engelbert should have called a meeting with all the players.
I’d have an entire league meeting…. When Caitlin Clark is on the floor playing the Mystics and we move from a 5000-seat arena to a 20,000-seat arena, all of you are gonna make a hell of a lot more money. So, put your petty jealousies and enmities aside and understand from a business standpoint, this is a great thing for the league.

He added that many players are jealous, as they might feel the Fever guard is not as good as some greats of the game. Those players might also believe that she earns a lot more money without possessing the accolades to show for.

Falk wants Engelbert to clarify to the players how, as a business, the Iowa native will help everyone. Therefore, it is best if they lay their hands off her, and treat her like another player in the league.
It is unclear how WNBA players will look at Caitlin Clark going forward. Even though David Falk wants the league to clear up matters revolving around the Fever guard, it is unlikely that the commissioner or the WNBPA would want any such thing to happen.
They do not want to upset the players who are in the league. They also do not want to make this a major talking point. Rather, they would prefer if the influx of fresh college players, helps to brush this problem aside.
The league hopes college stars with a good social media presence coming into the league will balance out the Caitlin Clark-centric crowd over the next few years. That could help to quietly eradicate this concern, rather than take a forceful, and possibly upsetting approach to it.
