The New York Liberty came up short in their recent matchup against the Phoenix Mercury falling 98-81. Despite the loss, Breanna Stewart delivered one of the best performances of the season so far—and made some history in the process.

Stewart stuffed the stat sheet, scoring 35 points on 11 of 17 shooting, grabbing three rebounds, three steals, and two assists. Most of her damage came in the third quarter; Stewart scored 18 points in the quarter, including a pair of threes.

During the game, she became the third player in WNBA history with the most 30-point games on 60% shooting, trailing only Brittany Griner and A'ja Wilson in that category.

Despite Stewart's brilliance, the Liberty were ultimately unable to seal the win, to an ascending Mercury team.

The tightly contested game came down to the fourth quarter, and the Liberty failed to match up with the Mercury physically, especially without Jonquel Jones, who has been sidelined due to injury.

The Liberty were dominant on the glass. They lost the rebound battle 42-23 and 15-6 on the offensive boards. Those second-chance points proved costly, as the Mercury took advantage.

To make matters worse they were also outscored them during the first ten minutes, struggling to keep pace with Phoenix in the final moments of the game.

Following the game, Liberty head coach Sandy Brondello expressed her disappointment

“We’re not happy with the way we played,” Brondello said via the New York Post. “They got energy as it went along with the success that they had. We let that one go.”
