The Indiana Fever are heading to the playoffs after clinching their spot with a win over the Washington Mystics on Sunday night. While Indiana is definitely ecstatic to qualify for the postseason, head coach Stephanie White made sure to remind her players and the rest of the league that the Fever are just getting started.
Indiana — which is missing several key players due to season-ending injuries, including Caitlin Clark, Sophie Cunningham and Sydney Colson — beat the Mystics 94-65 behind a balanced scoring effort and tight defense.
Five players scored in double figures, led by Natasha Howard who had 17 points. Aerial Powers added 15 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals off the bench.
The Fever also forced 21 turnovers against the Mystics and scored 27 points off those mistakes, allowing the team to lead by as many as 33 points in the contest.
Following the game, White praised Indiana's performance in her locker-room speech. She also took note of their resilience amid the injury woes, highlighting how they "kept figuring things out" and "put each other in positions to be successful" despite the adversity.
However, the veteran head coach emphasized that Indiana "ain't done yet" in a message to motivate her team for the playoffs and to warn rivals.
"No one is gonna want to see us," White said of the WNBA playoffs. "That's right. Nobody. Nobody. I'm not gonna sing it, but yes. So we continue to focus on competing to the standard, preparing for the standard, all right? And then we scare the hell out of this league in the playoffs."
It will definitely be interesting to see how far White and her Fever can go in the playoffs. As Parker Johnson of Athlon Sports reported, Indiana's most likely opponents in the first round of the postseason are either the Las Vegas Aces or Atlanta Dream. The Phoenix Mercury are also a possibility, although that is less likely.
The Fever are seventh in the standings but could move up to No. 6 if they win their final game of the season and the sixth-seeded Golden State Valkyries lose out their remaining games. The Aces, Dream and Mercury rank second to fourth, respectively.
The playoffs begin on Sunday, with the regular season officially ending on Thursday.
