Paige Bueckers is starting her WNBA career with the Dallas Wings. Despite boasting a 0-3 record to start the 2025 season, which was expected, the team seems to be playing better.
Bueckers, fresh off her senior season with the UConn Huskies, averages 13.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, 6.7 assists and 1.7 steals per game, shooting 37.1% from the field, 33.3% from deep and 80% from the free-throw line.
The Wings are still looking for their first win this season and in the Bueckers era, but they remain confident that things will eventually get better. After an offseason full of departures and arrivals, the Texan franchise still has things to figure out to compete with the top squads in the league.
Meanwhile, their stars are working hard and supporting the rest of the team to unlock their potential.
On Friday, Grant Afseth of the Dallas Hoops Journal shared that Luisa Geiselsoder, drafted in 2020 and just joined the team this season, has found support in her teammates as she transitions from FIBA basketball to the WNBA.
One of the biggest surprises for the center was the defensive three-second rule, which occurs when a defensive player spends more than three seconds inside the free-throw lane.
Arike Ogunbowale and Teaira McCowan noticed that the German hadn't moved from the paint in Minnesota, and McCowan reacted to that.
“She had never heard of it,” McCowan said. “I told her, ‘Yeah, you can’t just stand there forever like in FIBA.’”
After learning about this major difference between international basketball and the WNBA, Geiselsoder thinks the W allows "freer basketball."
More than that, she credited Ogunbowale and Bueckers, the team's two biggest stars, for helping them during this transition period.
“Arike helped from the beginning,” Geiselsoder said. “She reached out to me pretty early. Paige [Bueckers] was always there. Honestly, every time I need something, I can ask no matter who — they’re all really open to help me.”
The Wings have an intriguing project in hand, but it will take time before all the pieces click and they can challenge the best teams in the league. Bueckers has shown interesting bits of her game, but it's still early for her to figure everything out.
Dallas will return to action on Saturday against the Atlanta Dream, hoping to win their first game of the campaign.
