PHOENIX — One of the main themes in Phoenix Mercury’s media day was how the team plans to build chemistry with so many new faces joining the core, something team leadership is confident won’t be an issue.
Phoenix general manager Nick U’Ren told the media this morning they were excited about the new additions, especially looking at each player’s character. He admits that chemistry does take time, and with how short the WNBA season is, he hopes to “expedite” the process.
“[The] good news is that our coaching staff is extremely talented in terms of building an ‘energy’ in the gym,” U’Ren explained. “People want to come to work every day and that matters.”
Phoenix head coach Nate Tibbetts believes that character comes first before results, citing U’Ren’s approach to the offseason with trades and signings. Tibbetts said that it doesn’t only come down to the rest of the roster, but also the staff. The Phoenix culture doesn’t only include the players but also those who are around the team.
“I feel like we’re so much farther along with our staff from a year ago,” Tibbetts said. “Everyone kind of knows what they’re doing, we’ve been through the league one year. I’m really excited with where we’re at and where we’re heading,”
