Sophie Cunningham's 2025 season, her first with the Indiana Fever, ended prematurely after she suffered a knee injury in August. She tore her right MCL during a game against the Connecticut Sun, forcing her to undergo surgery.
The 29-year-old guard played in 30 games for Indiana, averaging 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.0 steal. She shot 46.9% from the field and 43.2% from 3-point range, which are both career highs.
Now, amid the WNBA offseason, Cunningham is undergoing rehab. She has been splitting her time between Indiana, Phoenix and Missouri, although she continues her recovery amid her busy schedule.
On Thursday, in the latest episode of her "Show Me Something" podcast, Cunningham provided some updates about her recovery, emphasizing that she's "doing really good."
"I'm running. Right now, I'm just trying to get stronger. I'm just trying to get my legs, and like my back and my core, stronger. But I'm doing really well," Cunningham shared.
The WNBA veteran proceeded to share her recovery timeline, where she highlighted that she's actually ahead of schedule.
"By Thanksgiving, I need to be sprinting, just in a straight line and backpedaling in a straight line, which I'm already pretty much doing that, so I'm ahead of schedule, which is good," Cunningham explained.
"And then after that, I can — and I'm already doing this, too — but like introduction to jumping and then cutting. And so by the first of the year, the goal is to be able to do an on-court, non-contact workout. So I'm ahead of schedule and I'm doing really well."
By the looks of it, Cunningham is well on track to return to full health before the 2026 season kicks off. The WNBA usually starts a new campaign in May.
It's worth noting, however, that Cunningham is a free agent and it remains uncertain if the Fever will bring her back. While there's clearly interest on her part to return to Indiana, she has said a number of times already that she's looking to get a bigger, multi-year contract in her next deal.
In fact, when she attended the pro-am event that precedes THE ANNIKA driven by Gainbridge at Pelican Golf Club, she told fans who were urging her to re-sign with the Fever that she and the other players want to get paid.
It will be interesting to see what Cunningham does next when it comes to her WNBA career, but for now, she's focused on getting back to 100% health.
