Sophie Cunningham had a great performance for the Indiana Fever in her first game back from a torn MCL. In the Fever's 109-91 preseason win against the New York Liberty on Saturday, the 29-year-old guard finished with 13 points on 3-of-6 shooting from deep, along with two rebounds, one assist and two steals.
Cunningham, who played 30 games for Indiana in 2025 before her season-ending injury, drew massive praise from her All-Star teammate Caitlin Clark following her performance.
Clark was full of praise for Cunningham while speaking to reporters after the game, highlighting how important and impactful the WNBA veteran is to the team.
"I think the thing I appreciate about Sophie more than anything is like she's never intimidated by the moment," Clark stated. "She rises to the occasion every single time. She's going to have her teammates’ backs … And when our backs are against the wall, she's one of the loudest voices out there, fighting and scrapping.
Clark added, "No matter the situation — whether we're down 20 or up 20 — it's the same Sophie. Every team in this league would probably love to have a player like that. I'm really fortunate she's on our side."
Cunningham, for her part, made sure to show her appreciation for Clark after hearing what she had to say about her.
"Aww love you little stinky," Cunningham wrote in the comments section of the Fever's video showing Clark's message.
Clark and Cunningham often troll each other on social media. In fact, before the preseason, Cunningham joked that Clark has the "attention span of a fish."
Despite their amusing interactions online, however, it's clear that the two have mutual respect and admiration for each other.
