Sophie Cunningham is done for the season. This was the big news that came out on Tuesday after the Indiana Fever confirmed that the 6-foot-1 guard had been diagnosed with a torn MCL.

Cunningham had to be helped off the court on Sunday against the Connecticut Sun, and it was clear that she was in significant pain. It’s pretty much a worst-case scenario for the Fever now that the 29-year-old will need to miss the rest of the campaign.

Sophie Cunningham Remains Thankful

Cunningham spoke about her season-ending injury on Tuesday’s episode of her “Show Me Something” podcast. Instead of feeling down about her dire situation, the Fever star instead opted to highlight the silver lining of what has been a memorable season for her.

“I will say I’m just thankful," she said. "I know this probably isn't the time to say this, but I'm just thankful to be where I’m at and be with the organization and the girls I’m with because they have brought life and my love of basketball back.

"I really am in really good spirits. I know. I am just thankful to be where I'm at and thankful for the year that I got.”

Cunningham’s rather unexpected admission comes after she received some devastating news that could potentially have a long-term impact on her basketball career. The fact that she is able to smile through it and choose to focus on how thankful she is says a lot about the type of person she is.

Cunningham to Go Under the Knife

Cunningham's co-host on the podcast, reality TV star West Wilson, was shocked after learning that Cunningham was done for the season. It was at that point that the Fever guard revealed that she would be going under the knife to address the injury.

"I am going to be done for the rest of the season, so that kinda sucks,” she said.

“So our next podcast will be pretty good because I'll just be getting done with surgery, so this should be a good tune in. It's all good, though. … It’s part of it, right? It is what it is.”

Cunningham did not provide more details on her upcoming surgery. However, given that her podcast airs weekly, it appears that she will have the procedure done within the next few days.

The fact that Cunningham will undergo surgery means that this will require a lengthy rehab process. While recovery time is relative on a case-by-case basis, more severe cases can take up to nine to 12 months.

The Fever should announce a timetable for Cunningham after her surgery, but at this point, it's possible that her recovery may extend up to the 2026 season.
