The Indiana Fever currently hold seventh position in the WNBA standings with an 18-16 record. The team, which entered the 2025 WNBA season with serious championship aspirations, suffered yet another loss against the Washington Mystics on Friday night — marking their fourth loss in the last five games.
The Fever's recent struggles can be attributed to some major injury issues. Earlier this month, Sydney Colson (ACL) and Aari McDonald (foot) were both ruled out for the remainder of the season.
More importantly, superstar point guard Caitlin Clark has missed the last month of action due to a groin injury she suffered during a matchup against the Connecticut Sun on July 15.
After the Fever's 88-84 loss to the Mystics on Friday night, veteran guard Sophie Cunningham spoke regarding the team's injury issues.
"We've had some hard injuries this year. We've had some different lineups and roster spots, and to be frank, I don't think anyone else around the league thinks that we can do it anymore," Cunningham said, via team insider Brian Haenchen. "But I think that our group does. We just have to get that confidence back. When we're clicking offensively, defensively, we're scary, and not a lot of teams can beat us, even with the roster that we have right now. So for us, it's just remembering who we are, our identity. We have to get back to being dogs and being aggressive, and not allowing teams like this to come in here and outwork us."
Cunningham recorded eight points and six assists in Friday's losing effort.
"You have to give yourself a little grace when you have so many new players," Cunningham added. "That's part of being a pro. You have to adjust, you have to learn fast and I think that's a really cool thing, too, because when you click, you click."
The Fever will face off against the Sun in their next matchup on Sunday afternoon.
