Since Sophie Cunningham joined the Indiana Fever via trade, she has built up a nice friendship with superstar point guard and de facto ‘Face of the WNBA’ Caitlin Clark.
The veteran named their relationship, along with Lexie Hull, as the ‘Tres Leches’, after the dessert. That has become a catchy way for fans to identify with them. Associating with the Iowa native has been beneficial for anyone, as all Fever players have seen a significant growth in their social media followers, endorsement deals, and fan appreciation.
But none has grown more than the Missouri star, whose one instance of standing up for the league’s most followed superstar resulted in her social media pages blowing up overnight. Now her Instagram and TikTok pages have more than 1 million followers. Along with her deals with Adidas, Arby’s, creating a podcast, Sophie Cunningham has enjoyed the fruits of that association.
Through the podcast, Show Me Something, which she started with her childhood friend, the 6′ 1″ guard has found instant success, while also dealing with fines as the WNBA keeps an eye on her unfiltered comments. In the latest episode, one of the most viral clips had her saying this:
I’ve never met you, I’ve actually really never listened to you. Someone sent it to me, and I was like, ‘What is this?’ He’s calling me a clout chaser? Dude, you’re the one who has my name plastered all over your YouTube that had 36 views, like get out of here.

The 29-year-old was referring to a recent video by veteran analyst Skip Bayless . She is responding to his claims of her being a clout chaser on the back of Caitlin Clark’s success.
Skip Bayless has a reputation for wild opinions, most of which have gone on to make him a household name. He did not take an interest in the WNBA until Caitlin Clark came around.
Since her rookie season, he has grown accustomed to the Indiana Fever and the league, and that is what led him to say this about veteran guard Sophie Cunningham.
In the 1st 6 years she was in the WNBA, nobody outside of Phoenix knew who she was… The heavens opened, and she got traded to Caitlin Clark’s team. She quickly befriended Caitlin, and she assumed the role of Caitlin’s defender. Did that quickly endear her to Caitlin’s billions of fans.

The 73-year-old went on to add that in the absence of the superstar point guard due to injury, Cunningham took on the role as the star on the court, and that benefited her even more.

Bayless, however, mentioned that the Missouri native backed her showboating with impressive performances on the court. But then concluded that she is a ‘shrewd operator’ who benefited the most from being Caitlin Clark’s friend.
Sophie Cunningham has completed surgery to repair her torn MCL and will look to rehab and recover throughout the offseason. Caitlin Clark, on the other hand, has been practicing with the team.
That led Indystar’s resident Fever reporter Chloe Peterson to ask head coach Stephanie White if the star point guard is getting ready to return before the end of the season.
That’s the hope, she’s working as hard as she can to make sure she is coming back or capable of coming back. I think that the long-term viewpoint of her health and wellness is the most important thing.
Stephanie White said
With just 3 games left, and playoff seedings on the line, it is possible that Clark can return for the game against the Washington Mystics or the regular-season finale against the Minnesota Lynx.
Caitlin Clark has not done any practices with contact, Steph White said.

On if she’s coming back in the regular season: “That's the hope … I think that the long term viewpoint of her health and wellness is the most important thing."https://t.co/jax7bAL3Vx pic.twitter.com/R1PNAz7TQC
Either way, Caitlin Clark will need to get some reps in before the Fever regroups and strategizes on how to battle their opponents in the first round of the playoffs.
