Indiana Fever superstar Sophie Cunningham has had a bit of a running rivalry going with Washington Mystics point guard Jacy Sheldon. Never one to turn down a chance to make a statement, Cunningham decided to use a recent signing event to take a dig at her rival.
According to Fanatics Collect, a fan recently asked the Fever superstar to sign a Jacy Sheldon trading card. Cunningham had a little fun with it, taking the card and writing “property of” before writing in her signature.
“Sophie Cunningham really did that," the company wrote on Instagram. “Back in June 17, in a matchup between the Indiana Fever and the Connecticut Sun, tensions boiled over when Sun guard Jacy Sheldon poked Caitlin Clark in the eye. Fever guard Sophie Cunningham, known for her toughness, quickly stepped into the role of Clark’s protector. Later in the game, Cunningham delivered a hard foul on Sheldon, grabbing her around the neck and pulling her to the floor, which sparked a brawl and resulted in ejections for both players.
“Cunningham was recently asked by a fan to sign Jacy Sheldon’s card, where she wrote 'property of' and left her signature.”
WNBA fans already love Cunningham, so news of her little troll job on Sheldon has earned her plenty of applause from everywhere:
“Sophie Cunningham is SO damn good for this league.”
“I love this girl. She’s great for the game. She’s the only one that sticks up for Caitlin Clark. She’s got her back 100% if it wasn’t for people like Caitlin Clark they wouldn’t be getting nearly what they’re getting paid and they will get more in the future to be honest with you when a WNBA came out in the early 2000s. I thought it might last a year or two somehow it stayed alive even when they were losing money but now they’re actually making money, but everybody hates this girl that’s in the league and it’s not because of how good she is or this or that other thing she takes up the attention you know what I’ll let anybody take up the attention they start putting more money in my pocket. I got no problem with that.”
“I definitely rock with Sophie for that…. I’ve seen guys in the league walk the other way when their teammate was into in it or got a hard foul committed on them. This is a part of the game that i think isn’t emphasized enough….. have your brothers/sisters back regardless of whatever….. we’ll deal with the consequences later….”
The Indiana Fever have been getting on just fine with Caitlin Clark still missing from action. In her absence, Cunningham has proven more than up to the task of filling the void.
The Fever are 6-4 since the All-Star break and while they may not be the top team in the league, the playoffs are well within sight.
Sophie Cunningham is quickly proving that the Fever - and the WNBA - is more than a one-woman show.
