The Indiana Fever made a significant shakeup to their roster on Friday night, parting ways with NaLyssa Smith and the No. 8 pick from this year's WNBA Draft to acquire Sophie Cunningham and the No. 19 pick from the Phoenix Mercury.
Back in September, the Mercury signed Cunningham to a contract extension. At that time, she said, "Phoenix has become my home away from home, and I am so thrilled to be in the Valley and continue to get to play in front of the best fans in the W." Unfortunately for the veteran guard, her time in Phoenix has come to an end.
On the bright side, Cunningham can now team up with Fever star Caitlin Clark.
If there were any concerns about how Clark and Cunningham will mesh on the Fever, just revisit the latter's comments on the "Travis Hearn Podcast." When she was on the show this past October, she said she'd love to be teammates with Clark.
Well, Cunningham got her wish.
"Absolutely not. I think that she's a gem," Cunningham said, via USA Today. "I didn't know her, but All-Star Weekend we kind of bantered back and forth a little bit. And she's lovely. She has a lot of pressure on her shoulders, and I think a lot of people always have a lot to say with people they don't even know or shoes they've never been in. And for me, I think she's handling the pressure very well. I think she's doing a lot of great things for women's basketball, and I'm a fan. Like I would love to play with her one day, for real."
Clark has not yet commented on Friday night's trade. We'd have to imagine she's somewhat upset about the Fever trading away Smith. They developed a strong bond on the court.
Cunningham had a respectable 2024 season for the Mercury, averaging 8.4 points and 3.9 rebounds per game. Her greatest attribute has to be her 3-point shooting. She made 37.8 percent of her attempts from downtown last year.
It'll be interesting to see how the new-look Fever perform next season.
