The Dallas Wings are still searching for their first win of the 2025 season, but rookie guard Paige Bueckers is more focused on growth than panic. After the team’s 0–4 start, Bueckers has emerged as a steady contributor and a steadying voice inside the locker room.

“Stay optimistic, stay positive,” Bueckers said after Monday’s practice. “Stay looking — like no former game can affect our next game. No former possession can affect our next possession.”

That mindset has become a core part of her approach to professional basketball. Even as frustrations surround the Wings’ early struggles, Bueckers is focused on building long-term habits.

“Just being there and trying to go possession by possession, game by game, learn from the past,” Bueckers said. “But don’t let it dictate you or affect you in any negative way. Just let it motivate you to be better.”

Paige Bueckers Focused on Process Over Pressure

Through four games, Bueckers has averaged 13.0 points, 6.3 assists, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.8 steals in 33.0 minutes per game. She became the fastest guard since Sue Bird to open a career with at least 50 points and 25 assists. But even with individual success, her focus remains on collective growth and team chemistry.

“We know like the 0–4 start — we’re not setting any expectations for ourselves because we’re just taking it day by day,” Bueckers said. “I think setting expectations limits you to what you can accomplish. So we’re just trying to grow in the film room, grow in the weight room, grow on the court, just grow with our chemistry and stick to it.”

She added: “We’re just trying to get better possession by possession, practice by practice, game by game. Just taking it day by day, step by step, drive by stride.”

Staying Present in a Demanding WNBA

For Bueckers, the emphasis on mental resilience began during her college years and has continued as she transitions to the WNBA.

“Just staying in the present moment has been my motto for the past year or so,” she said. “Like it’s so easy to get caught up in the past and what you just accomplished and then what you just did yesterday, that you forget about where you are now and forget to take advantage of that moment.”

She’s acknowledged the challenges of the WNBA transition — including the faster pace, shorter shot clock, physicality, and size at every position — but has navigated them with poise. Her decision-making and composure have drawn praise from coaches and teammates alike, especially as the Wings look to establish an identity without rushing results.

Return to Connecticut Marks a Homecoming

On Tuesday night, Bueckers will play her first professional game at Mohegan Sun Arena, where she starred during her historic run at UConn. The matchup against the Connecticut Sun offers more than just a chance for the Wings to earn their first win — it brings Bueckers full circle.

Fan interest in the game is high, particularly in Connecticut, where Bueckers’ influence remains strong. Her jersey remains one of the most popular among WNBA rookies, and local excitement around her return has added energy to the Wings’ upcoming road trip.

The Wings (0–4) will lean on that momentum as they continue to build toward their first win, with their rookie guard leading both on the stat sheet and in mindset.
