The short-handed Indiana Fever are fighting for a spot in this year's WNBA playoffs. They defeated the Seattle Storm, another team that is on the bubble, with relative ease on Tuesday, and that victory gave them a 20-18 record, which puts them in sixth place.
They have been without Caitlin Clark, Sophie Cunningham and Aari McDonald, just to name a few players who are out with injuries. While Cunningham and McDonald are out for the year, Clark is starting to ramp things up after suffering a strained groin in mid-July.
Before Tuesday's game, Indiana coach Stephanie White addressed the media and talked about where Clark is as far as her recovery.
According to White, Clark took part in a walk-through on Monday. However, White said the All-Star needs to take part in practice and get her wind back before she can be ready for game action.
“She went through our walk-through yesterday,” White said. “Today it was really short prior to game time. She went through it yesterday, and I want to see her in practice, live in practice. Want to see her to continue to not just build endurance, but to be able to handle contact 94-feet as it is in game. To be able to do that and sustain from an endurance timeline. To be able to do that is going to take multiple practices to make sure there is no regression. See how she plays through fatigue.”
Indiana has six games left in the regular season, and four of them will be on the road. White was asked if there would be enough practice time to get Clark ready for a potential return.
“Not necessarily team practices, but being able to put together three’s, four’s and different things that we can put together.”
Clark has appeared in just 13 games so far this season due to multiple injuries. She's averaging 16.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 8.8 assists a game, but her 3-point accuracy is at just 27.9%. She was struggling mightily to hit from 3-point range for a few weeks prior to her current injury.
While she has been out, one player who has stepped up is fellow All-Star guard Kelsey Mitchell. In fact, in Tuesday's game, Mitchell surpassed Clark to become the single-season record holder in points in team history.
The Fever's remaining six regular-season games will take place against the Los Angeles Sparks, Golden State Valkyries, Phoenix Mercury, Chicago Sky, Washington Mystics and Minnesota Lynx. The Mercury and Lynx are among the best teams in the WNBA, while the Sparks and Valkyries are also competing to get into the playoffs.
Although the Sky are 9-28, that game won't be easy either, as it could feature Clark going up against her budding rival, Angel Reese. There don't appear to be any love lost between those two All-Stars.
It seems like the Fever won't necessarily rush Clark back. But they do need her back as soon as possible to solidify their playoff chances.
