Stephanie White understands the significance of Sunday’s preseason matchup. Her Indiana Fever team will play the Brazil National Team in Iowa City — a return to the University of Iowa for Caitlin Clark.
Clark missed Saturday’s preseason opener, a game the Fever won in overtime against the Washington Mystics, 79-74. While Sophie Cunningham stole the spotlight with 21 points off the bench, the postgame focus quickly shifted to the Fever's head coach and the health status of her second-year star.
White was asked about Clark’s availability for Sunday’s game at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, and she offered an optimistic update.
"She had a lot of progress in the last 24 hours, and that was our goal," White said. "Our goal is to see how she progresses every day. We'll see how she feels after the workouts that she went through today."

Clark, a native of Des Moines, Iowa, starred at Dowling Catholic High School before heading to Iowa City, where she became a college basketball icon.
During her time with the Hawkeyes, she was a two-time Associated Press Player of the Year and a two-time recipient of the John R. Wooden Award. Clark led the Hawkeyes to back-to-back NCAA championship game appearances. Although they lost both title games, she became the face of women’s college basketball.
After her legendary college career, Clark was selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft and immediately became a sensation. She finished her rookie season averaging 19.2 points per game and was named WNBA Rookie of the Year. The Fever made the playoffs but were eliminated in two games by the Connecticut Sun.
Now in her first season as head coach of the Fever, White brings her own strong ties to Indiana. A native of West Lebanon and Indiana Miss Basketball in 1995, White returns to the Fever after coaching the team in 2015 and 2016, compiling a 37-31 record.
White most recently led the Connecticut Sun to a 55-25 record over two seasons before rejoining the Indiana organization.
