Sophie Cunningham has dapped with DeWanna Bonner, albeit briefly, during the latter’s time with the Indiana Fever months ago, and everyone knew how this went south. Soon, Bonner signed with the Phoenix Mercury, and just weeks ago, she saw herself facing Cunningham and co.
That August 7 game saw the Fever visit the Mercury, with Cunningham getting a pretty warm welcome from her former team. However, things changed mid-game. It saw Cunningham, along with Lexie Hull, exchange words with Bonner, showing that the bad blood is still very much there.
A week later, Sophie Cunningham knew she had to speak up about this moment. Speaking on Wednesday’s episode of her “Show Me Something” podcast, she weighed in on the beef between the Fever and the Mercury.
“There’s some, maybe a little bit of beef, because of our last podcast with how I mentioned some people should handle situations,” she said.
“But I could have been way meaner. … She didn’t listen to the whole clip. She just saw the thing about she could have handled it more professional, which honestly, everyone that’s talked to me besides their team was like, ‘Yeah, she could have.’ And so it’s like, ‘Duh.’”

Sophie Cunningham didn’t shy away from speaking her mind about facing her old squad. She brushed off the night’s 95-60 loss with a grin, making it clear she was more than happy to take her own little wins against them.
“That team’s just drama to me. I don’t know. But I went home and started hitting some threes. You know I was talking all (expletive). Oh god, it felt so good. I know we lost by 30, but I still got mine off.”
Sophie Cunningham might’ve made things clear at her recent episode, but it wouldn’t be like this if it weren’t for her last episode on August 5, where she claimed that Bonner should’ve left the Fever more gracefully.
“DB was one of my vets when I was in Phoenix, and then we gathered here in Indiana,” Cunningham said. “…But she got to Indiana and she just really wasn’t happy… so that’s why I’m kind of neutral on this one, which a lot of people are surprised about. She’s towards the end of her career, so she deserves her flowers, she deserves to be happy.”
The issue between Sophie Cunningham’s Fever and Bonner occurred on June when the latter suddenly left games due to “personal reasons,” which then soon escalated when the Fever waived Bonner, citing she grew dissatisfied with the team.
