The Las Vegas Aces have been on an historic roll this season, racking up a franchise record 16 straight wins and shooting a record 22 three-pointers in their dominating win over the Los Angeles Sparks to close out the regular season.

A’ja Wilson has led her team this entire season with her stellar play on the court. Earning WNBA Player of the Week and Player of the Month multiple times this season.

Wilson can now add two more accolade to her resume this season, a second-straight AP Player of the Year honor and Defensive Player of the Year. Wilson was able to edge out Napheesa Collier of Minnesota and Alyssa Thomas of Phoenix for both honors.

This is the third time in four seasons that Wilson has been named Defensive Player of the Year. Both players have had amazing seasons, respectively.

In a recent interview, Aces coach Becky Hammon had this to say about A’ja Wilson, “She’s put in the work, and she passes all the tests — the math tests, the optics tests — she’s the most exciting player in the W.  And here’s the thing, she’s also the most exciting player on the defensive end. She will do something once a game defensively that’s going to get you out of your seat. She’s the only player in this league that I’ve seen that has defensive highlights on a consistent basis.”

A’ja Wilson credits her defense to her college coach at South Carolina Dawn Staley “Considering coach (Dawn) Staley was so hard on me about my defense in college, I’m glad I can have some success at the pro level multiple times.”

With the ending of the WNBA regular season occurring this week, critics and fans alike are waiting to see who will be awarded the league’s MVP for the season, Wilson looks to be a strong favorite.

If Wilson does win the MVP award, it would be her fourth-straight time doing so.
