Sophie Cunningham wasn’t having it when fans accused her of flopping during the Indiana Fever’s heated matchup with the Connecticut Sun on Tuesday night.
In their highly anticipated rematch—following the now-viral “Barbie Brawl” at Gainbridge Fieldhouse—Cunningham took a hard elbow to the back of the head from Sun forward Olivia Nelson-Ododa. Despite a referee being only a few feet away, no foul was called.
Cunningham popped back up and motioned that she’d been hit. A replay later confirmed what many viewers already suspected: Nelson-Ododa’s elbow landed squarely on the back of her head.
Not one to stay silent, Cunningham took to X to respond:
“they said I flopped. el oh el,” she posted.
This wasn’t her first fiery exchange with a Sun player. She previously got into it with Jacy Sheldon, a clash that led to her being tossed from the game. But this time, Cunningham did her talking on the floor.
She came off the bench and delivered a well-rounded performance: 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting, including 2-of-3 from beyond the arc, along with three boards, an assist, and three steals in 26 minutes.
The Connecticut Sun hosted Sophie Cunningham and the Indiana Fever at the TD Garden on Tuesday, and before tip-off, Cunningham showed off her stunning fit as she walked into the Garden.
The former Phoenix Mercury guard wore a sharp, oversized gray blazer as a dress and paired it with sleek black heels, exuding a strong boss energy ahead of their “Barbie Brawl” rematch. Fans quickly noticed her gameday outfit and immediately showered her with love.
“Sophie looks like she has some business to take care of,” said one fan.
Another said, “Dressed to win!!”
Cunningham’s growing confidence, both on and off the court, has been the Fever’s spark plug as they aim to keep their hot streak alive.
Following their 85-77 win over the Sun, they’ll face Sabrina Ionescu and the New York Liberty with a back-to-back match before the WNBA All-Star break.
