WNBA Announces Decision On Fever vs. Sun Punishments

The WNBA had a busy morning sorting out all the madness from Tuesday night's game between the Connecticut Sun and Indiana Fever.

During the third quarter of action, Jacy Sheldon received a flagrant 1 for poking Caitlin Clark in the eye. The All-Star guard let Sheldon know that she wasn't OK with her antics, which then led to Marina Mabrey stepping in and pushing Clark to the ground.

Fever guard Sophie Cunningham retaliated in the fourth quarter by pulling Sheldon to the ground on a fast break. She was ejected for that decision.

"I think it was pretty obvious that stuff was brewing, right? When the officials don't get control of the ballgame, when they allow that stuff to happen, and it's been happening all season long, all season long... It's not just this game. It's been happening all season long," Fever head coach Stephanie White told reporters. "You've got competitive women who are the best in the world at what they do, and when you allow them to play physical, and you allow these things to happen, they're going to compete, and they're going to have their teammates' backs."

Moments ago, the WNBA received an update on punishments for Cunningham and Mabrey.

According to ESPN's Alexa Philippou, the WNBA has upgraded Mabrey's technical foul to a flagrant 2. That means she'll receive a standard fine for her actions.

Cunningham, meanwhile, was fined separately for her foul on Sheldon. That makes sense considering she was handed a flagrant 2.

The biggest takeaway is the WNBA won't suspend any of the players involved in either altercation.

Judging by the reactions on social media, WNBA fans believe Cunningham and Mabrey got off easy.

On July 15, the Fever and Sun will meet again. It wouldn't surprise us if we see more fireworks on the hardwood.
