Week 5 of the 2025 WNBA season just wrapped and the league recognized a Washington Mystics center for the work she put in. The Mystics have performed well this season, thanks to the emergence of the veteran guard Brittney Sykes. The lead guard is playing like an All-Star, averaging almost 20 points for the first time in her career.
Additionally, rookies Sonia Citron and Kiki Iriafen have both played well. Both first-year players are considered favorites to win the Rookie of the Year. Citron is averaging 14.6 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists. Iriafen, on the other hand, is putting up 13.4 points and 8.6 rebounds.
However, the true star for the Mystics this past week has been Shakira Austin.
The league named Austin as the Eastern Conference Player of the Week. Through the three games they played last week, the frontcourt star averaged 19.3 points, 8.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 2.0 steals and 2.3 blocks. Her all-around game propelled the Mystics to a 2-1 record.
For the Western Conference Player of the Week, the WNBA recognized Seattle Storm star Nneka Ogwumike.

Ahead of the Mystics' contest against the Minnesota Lynx, Austin talked about winning her first-ever Player of the Week award.
"I'm just hungry. I'm out here, I want to be on the floor. I want to be playing. And I'm showing that when I get out there, I do what I need to do. I'm just trying to stack games," Austin said via Tyler Byrum's X post.
Overall, the No. 3 pick of the 2022 draft is the team's fourth-best scorer. She's averaging 10.8 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.1 blocks.
