Phoenix Mercury legend Diana Taurasi has had a complicated relationship with Caitlin Clark. The former WNBA star previously expressed skepticism about Clark's ability to transition from college basketball to the pro ranks in 2024.
Taurasi's latest WNBA prediction indirectly relates to Clark. It is worth noting that Taurasi has been effusive in her praise for the Fever guard in recent months.
"It was amazing," Taurasi said regarding playing against Clark during ESPN's "Bird and Taurasi" alternate broadcast of the women's college basketball championship on April 6. "You know, I've been following Caitlin's career for so long and been watching her college career just in awe."
It appears Taurasi believes Paige Bueckers can surpass the current cast of great WNBA players, including Clark, to eventually become The W's top star. During a May 23 interview with The Athletic's "No Offseason' podcast, Taurasi predicted that Bueckers will become the WNBA's best player.
With Caitlin Clark on, Diana Taurasi tells her and Sue Bird how “amazing” it was to play her in the #WNBA last season.

“If you could play anyone in this new generation, I got to cross paths with Caitlin.”

"And the one thing I know about Paige is she’s so grounded, so patient, and she’s so prepared," Taurasi explained. "She’s learned that in the last four or five years, and all those things that she learned at Connecticut are going to change the way you look at that team. One day, she’s going to end up being the best player in the league for sure.
"... Paige’s instincts on the court are just incredible, and it takes a special skill and talent when you can galvanize a group of people. I’ve been around her long enough to know that once they get the right group around her, things will change because of her skill set and her ability to distribute and score."

Don't worry, Mercury fans. Taurasi also expressed her continued love for the Phoenix franchise, even if she is no longer playing.
"Once we get Kah (Kahleah Copper) back, I'm really excited for this new team," Taurasi noted. "I love what they've done.
"You know, that's my team for life. I'm always rooting for them. I'm going to be cheering them on all summer."
