Minnesota Lynx forward Napheesa Collier did not have the kind of ending she would have hoped for after a stellar 2025 campaign. The All-Star forward put together an MVP-caliber season, averaging 22.9 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game while leading the Lynx to the No. 1 overall seed. Her consistent two-way dominance placed her firmly in MVP conversations and established the Lynx as one of the league’s toughest defensive teams.
But her postseason ended in heartbreak after she suffered a late-game ankle injury during the playoff series against the Phoenix Mercury, following what many fans saw as a missed foul call. The Lynx were eliminated soon after, and Collier publicly criticized WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert over officiating consistency and player protection, sparking wide debate across the league.
Amid the controversy, the WNBA announced on Wednesday that Collier had been named to the All-Defensive First Team, joining A’ja Wilson, Gabby Williams, Alanna Smith, and Alyssa Thomas. Collier was instrumental in helping Minnesota hold opponents to just 76.66 points per game—the second-best defensive mark in the league behind the Golden State Valkyries.
This marks the second All-Defensive First Team honor of her seven-year WNBA career. Collier, who won Defensive Player of the Year in 2024, earned her first First Team selection that same season. She was also previously named to the Second Team in 2020 and 2023.

Her defensive versatility was key in anchoring a Lynx team that thrived on intensity and discipline, setting the tone each night with her effort on the glass and ability to guard multiple positions.
The award also serves as validation of her season-long excellence despite its abrupt end. While her outspoken criticism drew strong reactions from the WNBA world, Collier’s defensive honor highlights the respect she commands among coaches and peers.
The announcement also comes as she begins recovery and shifts her attention toward the offseason, where she’ll continue to balance her rehabilitation with her off-court ventures.
Collier’s Unrivaled 3×3 league, which she co-founded, is set to return for its second season early next year before the WNBA resumes. The 29-year-old will now focus on returning stronger for the 2026 season, looking to once again reach MVP form and lead Minnesota’s push for another deep postseason run.
