WNBA Player Makes Unfortunate History on Sunday

Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky (2-4) haven’t had the strongest start to the 2025 WNBA season, dropping their first four games. But Reese’s former teammate, Marina Mabrey, and the Connecticut Sun may be facing even bigger struggles.

On Sunday, Mabrey and the Sun (1-6) were handed their sixth loss of the season, falling to Breanna Stewart and the defending champion New York Liberty 100-52.

Mabrey finished the game with eight points on 2-of-11 shooting, four rebounds and two assists. Connecticut forward Tina Charles added 10 points on 5-of-12 shooting and one rebound.

And both players were on the unfortunate side of history.

Mabrey finished the loss with a plus/minus of minus-55. This marked the worst plus/minus ever recorded in WNBA history

Charles, on the other hand, finished with a minus-48, the second-worst in league history. Olivia Nelson-Ododa also had a minus-44, which would have tied the previous record.

The initial record belonged to Tulsa Shock center Tiffany Jackson, who recorded a minus-44 in a 102-63 loss to the Phoenix Mercury on July 10, 2011. Former Indiana Fever forward Jazmon Gwathmey later tied Jackson on August 18, 2017 in a 111-52 loss to the Minnesota Lynx.

Mabrey spent two seasons with the Sky in 2023 and 2024. During Reese's rookie year, Mabrey requested a trade from Chicago and was sent to the Sun just before the All-Star break.

The eighth-year guard has become one of Connecticut's top options with a completely retooled roster. The team notably parted ways with coach Stephanie White and star Alyssa Thomas.

Prior to the loss to New York, Mabrey was averaging 16.2 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.5 assists.

Up next for the Sun, a battle with Brittney Griner and the Atlanta Dream on Friday.
