Now on her fifth year in the WNBA, New York Liberty Star Sabrina Ionescu has established herself as one of the league’s best players. Interestingly enough, the talented guard’s choice of NBA GOAT will stir up various debates on whether she made the right choice or not.
Born in California, Ionescu was a standout player at Miramonte High School and later at the University of Oregon, where she is considered one of the greatest collegiate players of all time.
Ionescu was selected as the first overall pick in the 2020 WNBA Draft by the New York Liberty. Since joining the league, she has been named to two consecutive All-Star teams and has made the All-WNBA Second Team twice. In 2023, Ionescu had a breakout season, setting the single-season record for three-pointers made and winning the Three-Point Contest. She also helped the Liberty reach the Finals and win their first championship.
In addition to her professional success, Ionescu has also represented the United States on the international stage. She won gold medals with the U.S. at the 2014 FIBA U-17 World Cup and the 2019 Pan American Games. Most recently, she made her senior national team debut at the 2022 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup, where she won a gold medal.
During the most recent WNBA All-Star Game, several stars from both teams were asked who their GOAT is. For Ionescu, though, her pick was Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry, as seen in a video shared by ClutchPoints on X.
“Who is your basketball GOAT?”
Sabrina Ionescu: “Steph Curry.”
Kelsey Plum: “LeBron James… [and] Diana Taurasi.”

When talking about who the NBA GOAT is, there are usually two guys being debated about – Los Angeles Lakers’ LeBron James and Chicago Bulls’ Michael Jordan. And while Curry is one of the best to ever play the game, Ionescu’s decision to go with the Warriors guard is an interesting one since his accomplishments doesn’t place him within the level of the two said players.
When all is said and done, everyone will take a look at what Curry has done in his NBA career. Hopefully, he can give justice to Ionescu’s GOAT claim by the end of his career.
