WNBA star Caitlin Clark will play a prominent role at this weekend’s Indianapolis 500 after being named Grand Marshal for the 110th running of the historic race.

Clark, who has already made an impact beyond the basketball court, will add another chapter to her growing profile by taking on one of motorsport’s most recognisable ceremonial duties at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Her involvement adds to an already packed event that includes former Formula 1 drivers, championship hopefuls, and one of the largest crowds in global sport.

Caitlin Clark brings star power to the Indy 500

As Grand Marshal, Caitlin Clark will deliver the traditional command for drivers to take their cars to the grid, placing her at the heart of the pre-race build-up for one of America’s biggest sporting occasions.

Speaking ahead of the event, Clark said she was proud to represent Gainbridge and highlighted the race’s significance in Indiana. She referred to the event as an iconic part of the state’s sporting culture.

“I’m honoured to represent Gainbridge as Grand Marshal of the Indy 500. I’m looking forward to experiencing an iconic piece of what makes Indiana so special and being part of the time-honoured tradition of ‘The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.’”

INDYCAR and Indianapolis Motor Speedway president J. Douglas Boles also spoke about Clark’s growing connection to Indiana sports fans since joining the Indiana Fever. Organisers believe her presence will bring additional energy to race day festivities.

“Since being drafted by the Fever, fans have been clamouring to share the epic celebration and thrilling excitement of Indy 500 Race Day with Caitlin. Caitlin will bring unique energy and presence to a quintessentially Hoosier experience and an absolutely bucket-list global sporting spectacle.”

Clark will not be the only celebrity involved during race weekend. Academy Award winner Brendan Fraser has also been named honorary starter for Sunday’s event.

Strong field and major storylines surround this year’s Indy 500

Clark’s appearance arrives during one of the most anticipated Indy 500 weekends in recent years. Defending champion Alex Palou secured pole position after another impressive qualifying performance at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Alexander Rossi and David Malukas will join Palou on the front row, while several former Formula 1 drivers remain spread throughout the 33-car field. Mick Schumacher, Romain Grosjean, Marcus Ericsson, Takuma Sato, and Rossi himself all enter the race carrying previous F1 experience.

Schumacher prepares for his Indy 500 debut after moving to IndyCar following his Formula 1 career with Haas. Grosjean continues searching for his first major oval breakthrough, while Ericsson returns as a former Indy 500 winner.

Dry weather conditions are currently expected for race day, which should increase the importance of pace, tyre management, and long run strategy across the 200-lap event.
