New York Liberty's Breanna Stewart admitted a few months ago that she has always admired former Phoenix Mercury icon Diana Taurasi. Both stars are proud alumni of UConn, a powerhouse in women’s basketball. Taurasi played for UConn from 2000 to 2004, while Stewart led the team from 2012 to 2016, winning multiple NCAA championships and cementing their legacies as collegiate and professional athletes.
"When I was at UConn, it was like, 'How many national championships did she win? And how can I beat her?'" Stewart told CBS Sports back in September. "That was that, and now it's kind of the same. She is the one who is setting the bar for everything in the WNBA. As someone in my prime, I'm like, 'Alright, that's the goal, that's where I need to get to,' and just making sure year after year I continue to get better."
But now, the two WNBA legends share an elite record.
Stewart and Taurasi are officially the fastest players in league history to reach 5,500 career points, each accomplishing the feat in just 266 games.

Since being drafted first overall by the Seattle Storm in 2016, Stewart has established herself as one of the most versatile and efficient players in WNBA history. A three-time WNBA champion and two-time league MVP, the forward is known for her elite scoring ability, rebounding and defensive versatility. She played a key role in the Seattle Storm’s championships in 2018 and 2020, then continued her dominance with the Liberty, leading them to their first-ever WNBA Championship in 2024.
Regarded as one of the greatest basketball players of all time, Taurasi has been a WNBA icon since entering the league in 2004 as the first overall pick by the Phoenix Mercury. A three-time WNBA champion, 2009 league MVP and 11-time All-Star, Taurasi is the league’s all-time leading scorer, surpassing 10,000 career points in 2023. Nicknamed the “White Mamba,” Taurasi retired at the age of 42 and concluded her 20-year basketball career in February, leaving behind a legacy that includes six Olympic gold medals and a profound impact on the sport.
Stewart and the Liberty will be playing against the Washington Mystics on Friday evening at 7:30 P.M. ET / 4:30 P.M. PT.
