The WNBA regular season tips off Friday evening, and excitement is building across the country for what promises to be another compelling year. With the preseason wrapping up, teams are finalizing their rosters and making difficult decisions that end, at least temporarily, the dreams of several players.

One of the more intriguing roster moves came Thursday when the Connecticut Sun released a familiar name.

According to UConn and Connecticut Sun reporter Maggie Vanoni, Yvonne Anderson, a point guard who previously played for the team, was waived for the second time in her WNBA career.

"Sun waive point guard Yvonne Anderson this morning prior to the last official practice of training camp later today"

Anderson entered the WNBA in 2012 as an undrafted free agent after a college career at the University of Texas.

Since then, she’s spent time between overseas leagues and brief WNBA stints. Her most recent run with the Sun came in 2022 when she appeared in 11 games before being waived.

Rachid Meziane takes over as head coach this season. Named Belgium's Sports Coach of the Year in 2023, Meziane brings a wealth of experience.

He served as an assistant for the French women’s national team from 2014 to 2021, then became the head coach for Belgium in November 2022.

Looking ahead to 2025, the Sun return some serious talent. Tina Charles, a former UConn star, leads the way as the team’s top scorer. She averaged 14.9 points and 9.6 rebounds per game last season. Marina Mabrey, a 5-foot-11 guard, also joins the Sun, bringing her 14.4 points per game from last year into the mix.

Connecticut has been one of the WNBA’s most consistent franchises. The Sun have reached the playoffs every year since 2017 but are still chasing their first championship.

They made the WNBA Finals in 2023 but lost to Las Vegas in four games. In 2019, they fell to Washington in five. Earlier in franchise history, they also lost back-to-back Finals in 2004 and 2005.

While the WNBA regular season begins Friday, the Sun won’t hit the court until Sunday when they host the Washington Mystics. After that, they stay home to face the defending champion Las Vegas Aces on May 22.

Their first road game comes quickly, with a trip to Minnesota on May 23.
