Paige Bueckers has an excellent Rookie of the Year case. Elite production has been paired with historic moments that few first-year players ever accomplish. She has been a good offensive player across the entire regular season for the Dallas Wings and delivers signature performances. The performance of hers that stands out the most is her historic 44-point game on an unbelievable 81 percent shooting performance, the most amount of points ever scored in a game WNBA rookie.
Dallas Wings rookie guard Paige Bueckers has revealed the reason behind her unexpected absence from a recent matchup against the Connecticut Sun. Speaking to Dallas Hoops Journal, Bueckers said she had fully intended to play after completing shootaround and pregame warmups, but suffered an adverse reaction to an IV administered shortly before tipoff.
“Just congestion-wise, being able to breathe. I actually planned on playing against Connecticut, but I ended up taking an IV right before the game, and my body kind of rejected it,” Bueckers told the publication. “That happened right before, so it was a late scratch. But honestly, I’m ready to go. As long as I can breathe and get up and down the floor, you’ll hear no excuses from me.”
Bueckers returned to action Friday night in Atlanta, where the Wings ultimately fell 100-78 to the Dream after fading late. The rookie posted 16 points and matched her career high with 10 assists, marking her second points–assists double-double of the season.
Maddy Siegrist led Dallas with a career-best 23 points on 10-of-17 shooting, while Amy Okonkwo added 11 points for her third straight double-figure outing. The Wings had just eight players available, with three recent additions signed to hardship contracts, including former UConn standout Christyn Williams, who joined the roster earlier that day.
So far this season, Paige Bueckers is averaging 19 points per game, 5.2 assists, and 3.9 rebounds. She shoots 46.6% from the field and 33.9% from beyond the arc.
