John Cena made an instant impact upon arriving on WWE's main roster when he interrupted Kurt Angle and slapped the Olympic Gold Medalist to display his ruthless aggression. It was a remarkable way to debut Cena on SmackDown, despite his eventual loss to Angle, and it helped put his name up in lights ahead of the greatest run of any WWE superstar in history.
The 48-year-old will call time on his storied career on December 13th at Saturday Night's Main Event, but that night isn't going to be just about the 17-time world champion's final farewell. He is giving back to the business as he has always done and announced on RAW (November 10th) that exhibition matches will be held between main roster stars and the best NXT talent.
Here, we look at six matches we want to see at SNME in Washington, D.C., featuring members of the men's and women's divisions. Let's hope there is a focus on booking legendary names with upcoming talent so that they genuinely get the rub with an eye-catching display in front of millions.
The first match that comes to mind between a top main roster star and an NXT talent is WWE Champion Cody Rhodes facing NXT North American Champion Ethan Page. There's no doubt Page is ready for a call-up to the main roster, and his recent partnership with Chelsea Green has only signified he could become a megastar on either RAW or SmackDown.
"Ethan Page — he’s another one that, if you meet Ethan Page, he could be 50 or he could be 25. He’s got a really unbelievable skill-set," - Cody Rhodes on Ethan Page.
NXT fans are well aware of just how much potential Page has, taking his in-ring work and mic skills to the next level since his AEW days. He's a wrestler Cody knows well from their time together in AEW, and while Ricky Saints could be another option for the American Nightmare, it feels more ideal for a face to collide with a heel in the nation's capital.
While Rhodes would likely pick up the victory, it could be a star-making matchup for Page and convince Triple H to pull the trigger on not only a main roster run but starting at the very top of the card. It wouldn't be the first time the pair had faced one another, as they locked horns on AEW Rampage in December 2021 in one of Page's "favourite matches" that "just clicked."
One of NXT's brightest talents is Myles Borne, and he continues to draw comparisons to Randy Orton for his appearance, physicality, and moveset, which are lighting up NXT on Tuesday nights. Putting Borne in the ring with Orton could lead to a passing of the torch moment if The Viper is willing to put the 26-year-old over.
Orton has already faced another of NXT's rising stars in Je'Von Evans, whom he defeated on an episode of the developmental show earlier this year. He is working on a part-time schedule, so it has become a rarity to see him in action in recent months, but that could further help draw attention to Borne if he becomes one of his few opponents this year.
Borne looks destined for superstardom in WWE, but isn't quite ready to jump to the main roster yet, which could mean experiencing a show of the magnitude of SNME is only going to be a massive benefit. 'Baby Randy' going toe-to-toe with one of the best technical wrestlers in pro wrestling history is a dream match of sorts.
There perhaps hasn't been a more controversial WWE signing from AEW than Blake Monroe, given she was their rival company's top women's star shortly before her contract expired, and she opted to fulfill her dream of becoming a WWE superstar. The toxicity between fans of either company reached fever pitch because Monroe (formerly known as Mariah May) was such a celebrated talent.
Some questioned her decision to jump ship, and after a topsy-turvy start in NXT, she is now thriving as one of the most promising stars in the entire company. She is the reigning NXT Women's North American Champion and produces compelling television with her gimmick on Tuesday nights.
Charlotte Flair knows all about overcoming tribalistic fans because she's spent much of her career defeating fan favourites, much to their frustration. But the 14-time world champion is taking a backseat to the main event scene, leading to a significant U-turn as she's regained widespread support from fans.

The Queen coming up against The Glamour is a match that could make for one of the best matches of the year because of their differing in-ring styles and focus on character work. One can imagine the 27-year-old pulling off an upset victory via a rollup and being able to boast this win once she is a main roster talent.
We have seen just how entertaining Je'Von Evans is on NXT and SmackDown after he answered Sami Zayn's United States Championship Open Challenge a month ago. He is one of the best high-flyers in the business, and his aerial style has wowed fans at the very start of what many expect to be a hugely successful career.
The 21-year-old is unbelievably talented and has even earned a spot in the 16-man 'Last Time is Now' tournament to face Cena at SNME. But he comes up against the returning Gunther on RAW (November 17), and the Ring General is favourite to win the tournament.
Evans will have faced Orton and Gunther in recent months, though, and that signifies just how highly thought of The Young OG is backstage. But a match against Rey Mysterio is the one that will truly get fans fully invested, because he'd be competing against the best high-flyer in pro wrestling history.
Just imagine the spots the pair pull off against one another, and how those who have never seen Evans get to witness the fastest-rising star in WWE. Rey is the ideal opponent for Je'Von and could even take him under his wing once a call-up arrives in a potential feud with his son, Dominik Mysterio.
WWE seem to be waiting for the best opportunity to debut Oba Femi on the main roster, and perhaps that comes at SNME when he insists on remaining on RAW or SmackDown as part of the exhibition format. The Nigerian powerhouse hasn't appeared on NXT TV since losing the NXT Championship to Ricky Saints in September, but he has been discussed for a potential call-up sooner rather than later.
Oba Femi's brutal wrestling style is a match made in heaven for Sheamus, a bruiser who loves a fight and works well against big men who are agile and that's the case for the 27-year-old. The Ruler and the Celtic Warrior could leave each other's chests bruised once it's all said and done.
Sheamus is at a stage of his career where putting upcoming stars over isn't a problem, which is why he's ideal to kickstart Oba's main roster run, with the Nigerian picking up a massive win. There's no chance the 310-pounder will be losing his first match, and allowing him to showcase his skills rather than squashing enhancement talent is the way to go.
Kendal Grey is tipped to become one of WWE's top stars in the years to come, which speaks volumes about the belief that the Evolve Women's Champion will be a success. She has been so impressive in developmental, displaying sensational athleticism, earning comparisons to Kurt Angle, and she is one of the lesser-known names who could be immediately handed a spotlight against one of WWE's top stars.
If we are to see a replica of Cena's SmackDown debut at SNME, then Becky Lynch is the best antagonist for the job, given she has been talking the best game of any female wrestler on the roster this year. Like Kurt Angle, she could ask if anyone backstage thinks they can step up to the Greatest of All-Time.
Step up Grey, who relishes the chance to show her skills against the Women's Intercontinental Champion, with Lynch perhaps being convinced to put the title on the line. The Man should retain, but what a way to showcase the 24-year-old and, by truly taking Cena's wish to retire on the same night that the future of the business makes names for themselves.
