Adam Copeland hasn't been seen in AEW since breaking his leg at Double or Nothing in May. He suffered the injury when leaping from the top of a cage to send Malakai Black through a table.
During Copeland's absence, AEW underwent some crucial shifts, with the primary change being a focus on legitimate long-term storytelling. Jon Moxley and the Death Riders are the leading faction in AEW as they continue to embark on a civil war against the locker room.
AEW could use Copeland's experience as a storyteller, both in the ring and on the microphone, as he would help elevate the growing story to new heights. Unfortunately, there is no set timeline for the veteran's return to the ring.
“We’ve been missing him very, very much," Tony Khan said during a news conference after Full Gear. "He was doing so great this year for us as the TNT Champion. We really missed the ‘Rated-R Superstar’ so much, and I can’t wait to hopefully get him back at some point in the near future. ... As soon as we can get him back, it’s going to make a huge positive difference to have Adam back on this team. We really missed the ‘Rated-R Superstar.’"
Positioning Copeland as part of AEW resistance would be an exciting move. He would be partnering with Orange Cassidy, Daniel Garcia and Darby Allin. All three of AEW's homegrown talents would learn from being next to the WWE Hall of Famer for a prolonged storyline. Copeland has plenty of knowledge to pass down.
Furthermore, the move would pit two of AEW's best veterans against each other. Moxley vs. Copeland would be a legitimate draw. It would give the fans something to get hyped for and it would finally give Copeland the kind of story arc that he deserves as one of the biggest names on the roster.
Unfortunately, there's no telling how deep this storyline will be by the time Copeland makes his return. If it's still going on and injecting Copeland is viable, the creative team should explore it. What AEW is doing right now is working. It would be smart to lean on the biggest names to help expedite a surge in growth and return to their previous audience sizes.
