The third successive AEW Dynamite gifts us with another name-branded event and another huge first. For their first time in Mexico, AEW makes more history by becoming the first American wrestling company to hold an event in CMLL’s Arena México in 59 years.
AEW will also be the first wrestling promotion, outside of CMLL, to air a live event from the venue. Maybe there’s more history to be made. They say great things come in threes.
Well, this is the third special AEW in succession, and momentum is building like a tidal wave. This week’s show will be only two and a half hours, but the potential for PPV-quality matches is there.
Can the belt-collecting CEO claim CMLL’s top women’s prize? Mercedes Mone faces Zeuxis in a rematch from last year. Zeuxis impressed but failed to best Mone for the TBS Championship. Given Mone has been watching with a steak dinner from the sidelines, how will “Timeless” Toni Storm scout the competition?
MJF returns to his “American hero” guise and will be seeking a huge upset over CMLL icon, Mistico. MJF needs to remember this isn’t the Sin Cara of WWE, but the Prince of Gold and Silver in his casa and hogar. Speaking of WWE, given World’s Collide supposedly giving lucha “authenticity”, now it’s AEW’s turn to display their alternative partnership.
What happens when you mix three of the most dynamic high-flyers in wrestling and Ricochet doing the best character work of his career? That’s not a dig at Ricochet’s aerial abilities. It’s the acknowledgement that what makes the former Prince Puma red hot is his antics and scheming.
How many unique ways are we going to see Ricochet get his head slapped?
Ricochet is somewhat the favorite for this match, given the grudge he has after he lost out in the last big-money match. At the time of writing, 4 million pesos is the equivalent of $210,950.44. Ricochet’s recent teases of getting a crew together, and Lio Rush is right there… or is that a red herring?
Hologram, one of 2024’s most overlooked wrestlers, returns to action. This would be a huge victory for the young luchador. Yet, Mascara Dorada is on home turf.
Expect flips, flops, character growth, and at least one big development during or post-match.
The incredible post-match ending to Will Ospreay and Swerve Strickland’s classic time limit draw last week saw the Aerial Assassin take the bullet for Strickland right to the face. We’ve got to be heading towards an Ospreay/Strickland vs. The Young Bucks at All In Texas, at least?
Not enough blood and guts have been spilt yet, as Death Riders and The Bucks look to get vengeance on a modified version of the team that beat them at Double or Nothing. In theory, this is a weaponless, less chaotic affair in theory. Practice, AEW’s leniencies with the rules, and the difficulties of managing ten of AEW’s most intelligent, volatile, and combustible men might take more than one referee.
With the return of a new Feeling, the AEW multi-man party match continues to provide a treasure trove of joyous wrestling spots and combinations, mini and overarching stories.
