Kris Statlander and Toni Storm Famous Last Words

(Kind of a wild opening to the show, but an exciting one nonetheless. Statlander’s epic retort and the brawl in the ring instantly had my blood pumping with adrenaline.)

Slowly, Statlander and Storm removed articles of clothing. Frustrated, Renee Paquette understandably removed her midriff jacket.

Storm began the conversation bemoaning her identity sans title and asked what Statlander was about. Statlander said she’s been evolving and delivered an emotionally arresting rant. Statlander demanded that Storm accept the outcome at WrestleDream. Paquette attempted to intervene, to which Statlander asked if the interview was over. She confirmed it was, and they marched off to the ring. Paquette asked for her jacket back.

No bell had rung, but the women traded blows regardless. Storm begged for the title to be used physically against her, and Statlander did the same; neither could go through with it. Storm, refusing to strike Statlander, instead kissed her on the forehead. They departed.

Jack Perry Addressed The Young Bucks

Perry admitted he had love and gratitude for the Young Bucks. However, he was irate at them leaving him to fend for himself before his return.  Sharing that his reunion with Luchasaurus brought things full-circle for him, he declared himself ready for the Jurassic Express versus Young Bucks match at WrestleDream. Luchasaurus roared in agreement.

The Demand (Toa Liona & Bishop Kaun) defeated The Hurt Syndicate (Bobby Lashley & Shelton Benjamin)

(Decent hoss fight, with Liona and Kaun shining as monsters. Benjamin has shone in AEW as expected, but Lashley in particular is starting to put in some of his career-best work.

Benjamin and Kaun battled to a near-stalemate; Benjamin interrupted with a sleeper hold. Lashley tagged in, maintaining a vertical hold on Kaun. The Almighty prepared for the newly legal Liona by kicking him off the ropes. Kaun lent his partner a chance for redemption by trapping Lashley on the ropes. Liona took advantage by dropping him to the floor.

A rampaging Liona charged at Lashley, who caught and hurled him with a German suplex. Benjamin reunited with Kaun once more, dropping him with a high kick. Ricochet pulled Kaun out of harm’s way, sacrificing himself as a kick propelled him away. Liona saved Kaun and absorbed a Pendulum-DDT as though it were nothing. Lashley fired back with a lariat. Distracted by MVP, Referee Bryce Remsburg missed that Ricochet laid Benjamin flat. Kaun pinned Benjamin for the win. MVP caught Liona with a crack of his cane against the back, splitting it in twain.

Jon Moxley and Darby Allin Face-to-Face

(I feel like I just watched a Batman film and I mean that in the best way possible.)

Behind a glass, Moxley mentioned that neither man has it in them to quit in their WrestleDream match. Attempting to dissuade the situation, he offered another chance to join the Death Riders. Allin alluded to a small desire to join, but his lack of respect for Moxley prevented it. Mostly because of the betrayal to Bryan Danielson. Retorting that sacrifices must be made, Moxley elaborated that no one had what it took to do what he did in the past year.

Bringing up his trip to Mount Everest, Allin expressed his self-perceived worth, that he’d bring Moxley’s empire down. Moxley stated he’d never lie to Allin, that the Death Riders’ purpose is about more than himself. Pac interrupted the segment, appearing by Allin by throwing him around the room on his side of the glass until his blood stained the window as he sank.

Claudio Castagnoli defeated Roderick Strong

(As expected, this match delivered on intensity. Both men were hitting hard until they could burn all of their fuel away.)

Strong and Castagnoli grappled across the ring, against the ropes, and on the mat. Catching Castagnoli’s leg mid-kick, Strong unleashed a series of chops on his vulnerable opponent. Headlock engaged on the floor, Castagnoli released for a shoulder tackle and a backbreaker. Firmly in control, the Swiss Death Rider engaged another headlock. Strong briefly escaped, but Castagnoli catapulted his opponent to the ropes and sent him through the ropes with a Big Boot. Strong finally managed a modicum of momentum, slamming Castagnoli on the apron. At ringside, Castagnoli swung Strong by his legs into the barricade.

A dropkick provided Strong with a comeback. Castagnoli quelled this with a clothesline and another headlock. Mounting a stiff offense, Strong sent Castagnoli into the barricade, dropping him onto it with a backbreaker. Strong sprinted into Castagnoli’s direction, leaping right into a European uppercut that devastated him to the point of no return. Castagnoli walked away with the pinfall victory.

Don Callis Family Birthday Segment

Kyle Fletcher, Josh Alexander, Hechicero, Kazuchika Okada, Lance Archer, and Trent Beretta congratulated Callis on one more trip around the Sun. Fletcher surprised him with a digital video call with Konosuke Takeshita, still in Japan after winning the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship at NJPW’s King of Pro-Wrestling. Takeshita thanked Callis, but his gratitude was cut short by Okada turning off the monitor, declaring it an accident.

Jurassic Express (Jungle Jack Perry & Luchasaurus) & Kenny Omega defeated Don Callis Family (Hechicero, Mark Davis, & Josh Alexander)

(Fantastic trios match. Omega slowly learned to trust Jurassic Express, and once that was achieved, they truly began to succeed.)

Omega stubbornly started things off, dancing through holds with Hechicero. Despite Omega’s high-speed grappling, Hechicero grounded him by targeting his left leg. Hechicero tumbled to the outside after a dropkick by Omega launched him. Propping Omega’s left leg on the rope, Alexander twisted it.

Perry was the next legal man, who sent Alexander into Luchasaurus’s clutches to slam. Perry further tormented the Canadian with a senton.  Hesitantly, Omega made up his mind to tag in and halt Alexander with a moonsault. Alexander locked Omega in for a series of German suplexes. Omega escaped for a knee and a V-Trigger for a nearfall. Davis and Luchasuaurus collided in a simultaneous clothesline that equalized both of them. Hechicero thrusted Perry around with a Swinging Hammerlock. Luchasaurus headbutted Davis, absolutely dazing the Aussie.

Don Callis distracted Omega. Davis made the most of the opportunity, rampaging to Omega, only for Perry to throw himself into the Australian’s path. Hechicero wrenched Omega’s arm back in excruciating fashion. Jurassic Express avenged their partner with a Doomsday Device on the luchador, and Perry landed the pinfall.

Post-match: Young Bucks superkicked Jurassic Express. Omegasaved Perry and implored them to stop. Luchasaurus double-clotheslined them, much to Omega’s shock and chagrin. The Don Callis Family rose again, but Perry dived into the sea of men.

Jamie Hayter defeated Skye Blue (with Julia Hart)

(Hayter’s flow as of late is confident, consistently putting on hard-hitting matches. Perfect to heat up for a match with Thekla at WrestleDream.)

Blue wrestled Hayter’s grip from her wrist, only to fall flat in an over-the-shoulder takedown. Hayter retaliated with multiple shoulder tackles. Pinning Blue down into the turbuckle, the Brit rained down a torrent of fists on the Chicagoan. Retreating behind Hart, Blue surprised an encroaching Hayter with a neckbreaker off the ring apron.

Blue momentarily regained control, which Hayter broke with a dropkick from the top turnbuckle. Hayter survived her opponent’s wrath in time to devastate with a backbreaker. Blue recoiled in agony following a Fallaway Slam but slumped over after another backbreaker and a lariat. Another lariat followed by Hayterade laid Blue unconscious for the pinfall.

Post-match: Thekla informed Hayter via the tron monitor that she laid out Hayter on her debut not for a personal reason, but due to Hayter being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Mercedes Mone interviewed by Renee Paquette

Mone steeled her attention to her upcoming CMLL Women’s Championship Match with Persephone on the upcoming weekend. She and Paquette also celebrated the impending milestone of being the longest reigning TBS Champion. Mone concluded the segment stating she’d keep an eye on WrestleDream.

The Opps (Samoa Joe, Katsuyori Shibata, & Powerhouse Hobbs) defeated La Faccion Ingobernable (RUSH, Dralistico, & The Beast Mortos) for the AEW World Trios Championship

(Shibata and Joe having the most to say in this match leaves me hoping something comes for Hobbs to sink his teeth into.)

Hobbs and Mortos tackled each other to resounding thuds and rapturous chants of “MEAT!” from the Independence crowd. Mortos found himself trapped on the top rope, to which he flew in Hobbs’s direction. Much to Shibata’s silent delight, he tagged in the same time RUSH did. The pair traded cacophonous chops that tenderized each other’s chest meat.

Joe stepped into the ring next, locking up with Mortos. The Samoan laid out the masked monster and postured angrily at Hangman Adam Page, who sat at commentary beside Bryan Danielson. Shibata tagged in just to kick RUSH on the ropes. Mortos cornered the Japanese wrestler, resulting in a triple-dropkick from the LFI members.

Dralistico haunted Shibata, chopping down until he knelt in the corner. Undeterred, Shibata returned fire with elbows and his signature dropkick. Hobbs tagged in for a Big Boot on the masked luchador. Slingshotting all three LFI members into the corner, RUSH prevented Hobbs’s charge with a kick. Hobbs caught Dralistico midair with a slam. Joe, with a hot tag, crushed Dralistico with a senton and a powerslam. Disorder followed, with Shibata relentless in his pursuit of RUSH. Joe tapped out Dralistico with a Coquina Clutch as he passed out in the Samoan’s immense arms.

Post-match: Joe postured to Page on the outside, but LFI, accompanied by recent member Sammy Guevara, assaulted the Opps. They also spat in Page’s face, who chased them off. Joe rose with Page’s belt, handing it to the champ as a silent and hesitant “thank you.”

Death Riders (Wheeler Yuta & Daniel Garcia with Marina Shafir) defeated The Conglomeration (Orange Cassidy & Kyle O’Reilly)

(The right mixture of fun and serious, with Cassidy’s antics contrasting with Allin’s dire state later.)

Garcia targeted Cassidy’s arms. Cassidy taunted him by hinting at his hands-in-pocket routine, only to do Garcia’s silly dance. O’Reilly kept Garcia grounded, resulting in him and Cassidy tying the young Death Rider on the ropes. Yuta attempted to make the save, but found himself locked against them as well.

Tornado-DDT from Cassidy wrecked Yuta. Jon Moxley prowled from the outside among the crowd. O’Reilly accompanied Cassidy with kicks to Garcia following a Stundog Millionaire. Guillotine Clutch via O’Reilly sapped the life from Garcia; Cassidy quelled Yuta’s attempts at rescue. Garcia tapped O’Reilly out, but Shafir distracted Referee Bryce Remsburg. Pac incapacitated Cassidy, while Claudio Castagnoli snuck up on O’Reilly with European Uppercuts. Garcia pinned O’Reilly for the pinfall.

Post-match: The Death Riders beat up Cassidy and O’Reilly, but stopped once Darby Allin’s music hit. Allin limped forward, visibly bleeding after Pac’s assault earlier on Dynamite. The Conglomeration and Roderick Strong brawled with the Death Riders as Allin greeted Moxley with the AEW flag he planted on Mount Everest. Someone in the crowd yelled they loved Allin as he told Moxley it’s not too late to say “I Quit”. Moxley dropped him with a Death Rider on the flag and left irate.

Megan Bayne, Penelope Ford, FTR, & Big Stoke Addressed Willow Nightingale and JetSpeed

Bayne complained that Nightingale’s “stupidity” was mistaken for bravery. She declared that what would happen to Harley Cameron would also be her fate at WrestleDream. Stoke bemoaned Kevin Knight’s alliance with Speedball Mike Bailey, calling the latter “Billy Ray Cyrus with an autoimmune disorder.” Dax Harwood continued the sentiments when JetSpeeed, Nightingale, and Cameron interrupted on the tron. Nightingale and Knight delivered an impassioned promo with Cameron cheerleading. Bailey approved.

As the unholy alliance stood in the ring, JetSpeed, Nightingale, and Cameron ambushed them. The band of heels then retreated to the back, aside from Bayne.

Megan Bayne defeated Harley Cameron

(Cameron showed a lot of heart in this bout, becoming a compelling underdog.)

Bayne charged at Cameron, but soon found herself shoulder-tackled into a corner. She found her footing, flinging Cameron all about. Cameron wore down her towering foe with kicks. However, Bayne retaliated by throwing the Australian back into the ring. Bayne perched herself on the top rope for an attempted moonsault, but Cameron flung her down, upside-down, and dropped her with a DDT.

Cameron powerbombed Bayne from the top rope for a close nearfall. Bayne leaped in a flying lariat to demolish her smaller opponent. Bayne set Cameron for a powerbomb, almost countered by a sweep of the legs. One last powerbomb from Bayne, and that did the trick. Megasus picked up the dub.

Eddie Kingston and Hook joined the Tag Team Division

Moving on from the mini-feud with LFI, Kingston suggested he and Hook do what they talked about prior to his return from injury: joining AEW’s tag team division.

The Acclaimed Bickered Backstage

Anthony Bowens and Max Caster’s lack of chemistry came to a head as they swore they’d never team up again and implored Tony Khan not to book them together again.

Mark Briscoe & BroDido (Bandido & Brody King) defeated Don Callis Family (Lance Archer, Rocky Romero, & Kyle Fletcher)

(Fantastic main event. Everything felt frenetic while addressing Briscoe and Bandido’s beef against the Don Callis Family.)

Briscoe overwhelmed Romero with a storm of fists, soon seeing Archer meeting the same fate. Fletcher traded chops with the Sussex County Chicken, soon laying entangled on the ropes. Briscoe and BroDido splashed themselves onto Fletcher in the corner. BroDido knocked the wind out of the TNT Champion with a Casadora Slam.

Archer and King teed off, with the latter toppling the Texan behemoth courtesy of a Death Valley Driver. Bandido suffered the wrath of Archer in the corner, assisted by a diving footstomp by Romero. Snapdragon Suplexes from Fletcher subdued Briscoe, but struggled to ground Bandido. Froggy Bow from Briscoe almost gave Bandido a pinfall over Fletcher. King helped Bandido with a Tornado-DDT to eject Archer. Briscoe and Fletcher brawled toward the back. Bandido superkicked Romero before King piledrove him. Bandido gained the pinfall over Romero.

Post-match: Clon darkened the arena, confusing BroDido. This provided a surprise attack from Okada, who used his AEW Unified Championship to batter his WrestleDream opponents senseless.

Final Thoughts

This double-feature show was jam-packed with great matches and promos. The Moxley/Allin and Statlander/Storm angles were particularly exhilarating. But with Kenny Omega teetering toward Jurassic Express and the Young Bucks opposing them, what’s the endgame there? I’m curious.
