AEW's Ortiz Reveals Contract Status and Future Plans
Ortiz AEW
  • Ortiz has about one year left on his AEW contract and would like to remain with the company.
  • He's coaching and producing in AEW, which he says improves his match-calling, longevity, and wrestling skills.
  • Though off AEW TV since Jan 2024, Ortiz wrestles indies worldwide and aims to return to AEW television.

AEW star Ortiz was recently a guest on Wombreezy, where he spoke about several different topics. Some of those topics include his TNA career, his former tag team partner Mike Santana, and his current contract with AEW.

Ortiz Reveals How Long He Has Left On His Current AEW Contract

Ortiz revealed that he has one year left with AEW, though from the sounds of it, he would like to stay with the company. While he hasn’t been in the AEW ring since January 2024, when Bryan Danielson and Claudio Castagnoli defeated him and Eddie Kingston on an episode of AEW Collision, Ortiz has been busy backstage. He’s both a producer and a coach for the company. He said:

“As of right now, I have about a year left with the company. Give or take on this current contract. I would love to stay there. I love working at AEW. I’ve been coaching and doing producing, which is learning a different skill and will give you longevity. It’s also making me be a better wrestler because I’m helping people call matches and I’m analyzing it from a different lens. I’m really enjoying that. It’s something I wanted to do anyway, and now I’m getting the opportunity to do it there. Even if I stay on purely to do coaching and producing, and I can still wrestle, I’m happy. If they keep me, I would stay.” (h/t: Fightful)

While he hasn’t been wrestling on AEW, Ortiz has still been pretty active in the independent scene. His last match was for Beyond Wrestling’s Americanrana event on August 29, 2025.

When Will Ortiz Return To The AEW Ring?

As mentioned, his last match for AEW was this past January. During the interview, Ortiz was asked about his career plans for 2026, which he brought up about being on television again and his current indie matches. He said:

“I think eventually I’ll be back on AEW television. That’s out of my control at the moment. I’m still able to stay fresh and do independents. Keep doing as much independents as possible. Go over to England, Mexico, Canada, and maybe go to Japan and do it for a week if I can work that out. Just become a better wrestler and performer, and get back on television. Put into action all the work I’ve been doing and change people’s perceptions.” (h/t: Fightful)

Ortiz has been with AEW since he and his then-partner Santana debuted on August 31, 2019, at the AEW All Out pay-per-view. Santana has since left the company and is currently in TNA, where he holds the TNA World Title. Ortiz, on the other hand, has yet to capture a title in AEW.
