The September 8 segment of Monday Night Raw from Wisconsin featured the long-awaited return of AJ Lee to the red brand after over 10 years. And it is safe to say that the road to Wrestlepalooza did not disappoint one bit. Lee made her trademark entrance with Becky Lynch’s Women’s Intercontinental Championship strapped around her waist, drawing a huge reaction from the crowd.
She then grabbed the microphone and opened by apologizing for keeping everyone waiting, but before she could continue, the arena erupted into a loud “Welcome back!” chant. Smiling, the former Divas Champion thanked the fans for the warm reception.
She then took a moment to introduce herself to newer fans and added that she was indeed their favorite wrestler’s favorite wrestler, citing her role in kicking off the Women’s Revolution back in 2015. Lee then reflected on her career, reminding the audience that she retired a decade ago.
At the time, she felt she had accomplished every dream she ever had in wrestling. She was content, hung up her Chuck Taylors, and believed she would never again step into the ring wearing her signature jean shorts. But life took Lee on a different path.
Over the past ten years, ‘The Black Widow’ chased new dreams outside of wrestling and, most importantly, embarked on a personal journey of mental health and self-discovery. This is when Lee took time to be vulnerable and acknowledge her struggles related to her mental health.
I wasn’t healthy, I needed to take care of myself, get right. I went to therapy, I got treatment, and I found a way to turn all this mental chaos into my superpower. And man, the fight is not easy, every day is a fight, but let me tell you, if you’re going through the same thing, that fight is worth it, you’re worth it.

The promo triggered loud “therapy” chants from the Milwaukee crowd. Lee shot back that she was perfectly happy and healthy and reflected that in another world, she and Lynch could have been friends, but things changed when Lynch “motorboated” her husband, put her hands on him, and defamed him.
That remark sparked a reaction, leading to Becky Lynch’s interruption. Lynch sported oversized sunglasses and soon revealed that she was covering up a black eye Lee had given her on SmackDown. The Irishwoman also demanded the return of her Intercontinental Championship. By this time, Seth Rollins also came out and backed his wife on her demand.

This is when Lee upped the stakes with an ultimatum: either step into the ring and take it back, or accept a mixed tag match at Wrestlepalooza. Lynch tried to send Rollins in to retrieve the belt for her, but before he could act, CM Punk’s music hit. Punk stormed the ring, going after Rollins and nearly landing a GTS.
The World Heavyweight Champion just barely escaped, rolling out of the ring before angrily accepting Lee’s challenge. The Irishwoman, however, was visibly upset to see her husband agree to the match.
AJ Lee’s WWE return has created a massive buzz, with stars like Triple H, Naomi, and Bayley all celebrating her comeback. The excitement has also translated into huge social media numbers, as clips featuring Lee and CM Punk have become the two most-shared WWE posts on Twitter.
One particularly interesting reaction came from Lyra Valkyria , who spoke about Lee’s return during an interview with FM102/1, and also a picture she posted involving Roxanne Perez nearly 11 years back.
Okay, so we have to talk about what just happened — this AJ Lee’s big return. Obviously, massive fan. Fans have actually gone back through my old tweets. You can see that I was a fan from like 2014. Oh, she’s got them right here. So here we are now looking at a tweet from me from 2014, where I just coincidentally tweeted a picture of AJ Lee meeting a very young Roxanne Perez.

The former Intercontinental Champion pointed out the wild coincidence, noting how surreal it felt to post that photo back in 2014 and now, 11 years later, be sharing a WWE roster with both Lee and Perez.
Why did I tweet AJ with a fan? That’s a bit like — who tweets other people’s fan pictures? Don’t know. But I’m so glad that I did. 2025. AJ Lee resigns. Roxanne Perez is someone I have a lot of history with. You know, we feuded over the NXT Women’s Championship. She’s just come up to Raw recently as well. We’re all on the same roster. AJ just returned. What a year. What a time to be in WWE.

Meanwhile, Roxanne Perez herself has been closely tied to both Punk and Lee. The former Divas Champion even reacted when Perez recently hit her signature finishing move on Punk, while Perez declared Lee’s comeback the greatest in professional wrestling history, ranking it even higher than Punk’s return at Survivor Series 2023.
Now, with all eyes on September 20th, the stage is set for AJ Lee and CM Punk to finally clash with Becky Lynch and Seth Rollins in one of WWE’s most anticipated mixed tag matches.
