WWE Hall of Famer calls for The Rock vs. Roman Reigns at WrestleMania

The Rock returned to WWE programming on Monday (Jan. 1.) for Raw Day 1. His segment was an in-ring promo with Jinder Mahal. During that promo, The Rock made a reference to potentially facing Roman Reigns. It was a subtle note, but everybody picked up on it when he mentioned "the head of the table."

During a recent episode of "The Hall of Fame with Booker T and Brad Gilmore," Booker T threw his support behind a potential match between the two wrestling titans.

"It’s got a buzz," Booker T said (h/t Fightful). "Everybody talking about it. I think that’s the modus operandi. I think that’s what that is, more than anything. For me, you don’t want to let that thing simmer too long. Rock, Father Time waits for no man [laughs], that’s just the way it is. For The Rock to get it done, this could be a great time for it. For Roman as well. Roman’s in his prime, at the height of his title reign. It’s not gonna get any higher than this. If it is that time to pull the trigger, hey man, pull the trigger."

Seeing The Rock back in the ring, facing the biggest name in the WWE, would be an incredible draw for the company. Both have a rabid fan base and would certainly draw interest from die-hards and casuals alike. However, there are some concerns regarding what a potential match would mean for Cody Rhodes.

"The American Nightmare" has long been positioned as the next face of WWE. He lost his previous match to Reigns, which took place at WrestleMania 39. Most fans expected a rematch this year, with Rhodes potentially winning and moving closer to his rightful place at the top of the company. However, Booker T believes that can still be done, just at a different premium live event (PLE.)

“I don’t know what’s gonna happen with Cody, but I do know if The Rock has got some time off, this may be a window," Booker T said. "Business is fluid. Sometimes the card is subject to change. I’m just saying."

A big part of WWE's business plan is creating viral moments that pop on social media. The return of CM Punk garnered millions of views online. A potential match between The Rock and Reigns would likely draw a similar sort of virality, which would be extremely profitable for the company.

If both wrestlers are willing to make the match happen and creative can find a lane to lead into WrestleMania, we could be about to witness history. Of course, finding a way to keep Rhodes relevant within the story will also be key. There's a lot to work on. Thankfully, WWE has four months to get a plan in place.
