Awesome Championship Facts From WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event

Amid the Golden Era, WWE was printing cash hand over fist, to such an extent that they decided to strike a deal with NBC and bring their brand of entertainment to network television.

Saturday Night’s Main Event was a home run for WWE. The show had the biggest stars, the best celebrities, and some of the most intriguing matchups in WWE history. It was a show where WWE could put together matches with great build, or ones that gave us fresh matchups. There was no telling what was going to happen on the show, especially considering the championship matches that took place.

For the most part, title matches didn’t amount to a whole lot at Saturday Night’s Main Event. But some shocked us all. Championship matches that deserve recognition in the annals of WWE history. Below are five of these matches.

The Heart Break Kid Starts His Journey To Stardom (Shawn Michaels vs The British Bulldog, SNME 1992)

Shawn Michaels turning heel was a heartbreaking moment for us all. It meant the end of the beloved Rockers, but it marked the beginning of HBK’s rise to the top. He was the young, cocky heel who had all the talent necessary to be a main eventer in WWE; he was waiting for his moment. It was a moment that came at Saturday Night’s Main Event.

HBK winning the Intercontinental Championship was a massive moment for the young star. It was a legitimizing moment for Michael’s burgeoning career. He carried the IC strap from that moment, with the arrogance that one would expect from a heel. HBK amassed an impressive array of matches during his reign, continuing the legacy set by his predecessors.

Everything that became of HBK can be traced back to this victory. He and the British Bulldog put on a great match that was the starting point for the future Hall of Famer.

The Genius Scores The Upset Of The Century

Hulk Hogan didn’t lose. The Immortal One, and WWE’s golden goose, was a mega star, and it was not very often that he saw himself on the losing end of a match. Hogan was a man who had the pull to go over in most matches, and even his losses would include the presence of every shenanigan possible.

When Hulk Hogan put his WWE Championship on the line against The Genius, no one batted an eye. The Genius was a manager, and one that didn’t have the physical gifts to topple anyone, let alone the biggest star in the company. The Genius was there to do a great sell job, but then the unthinkable happened when he scored the dubious countout victory over the WWE Champion.

The Genius wasn’t ever going to win this match without some help, but the fact that he won is shocking on its own. He was never a man who was taken seriously and was there as a punching bag more than anything. It was an insult to everything that Hulk Hogan stood for that he was bested by a manager.

His list of WWE Championship losses contains the likes of Andre the Giant, The Ultimate Warrior, and The Undertaker. Having The Genius on there is a blackmark on Hulk Hogan’s championship resume.

Andre the Giant Finally Wins The WWE Championship

There will be a few entries on this list that took place at the Main Event show, but it is considered an offshoot of Saturday Night’s Main Event. If it’s good enough for WWE, then it’s good enough for this list.

The 8th Wonder of the World was the definition of an attraction. Andre the Giant would wow audiences worldwide with his size and charisma. His star was bright, but as the Golden Era gained steam, it was dimmed by WWE’s new golden child, Hulk Hogan. The former friends developed a rivalry that led to an iconic showdown at WrestleMania 3. A showdown that saw Hogan go over, but the issues were not finished there.

A rematch was scheduled for network television at the Main Event. It was a clash of icons that saw the titans tear into each other. It was a so-so match that was highlighted by the very dubious 3-count made by referee Dave Hebner, twin brother of Earl.

More importantly, though, this was the first and only time that Andre the Giant captured the WWE Championship. It was a short-lived reign, but the only one for the largest athlete in the world.

The Night The Rockers Won The Tag Team Championships, Or Did They?

The Rockers were one of the most popular tag teams during the Golden Era. Their flashy clothes and high-flying style made them instant fan favourites.  They were a huge contrast to the big, bruising tag teams of the day, and it’s honestly a shame that they were never able to lay their hands on tag team gold. Well, that fact isn’t exactly as true as some may believe.

On a cold October night in 1990, WWE Tag Team Champions The Hart Foundation stood across the ring from The Rockers. It was a fantastic back-and-forth affair that never allowed either team to gain a clear advantage over the other. The match was great, but it’s more known for the wonky finish that included a broken ring rope. A ring rope that aided in The Rockers winning the WWE Tag Team Championships.

It was a title change that surprised many, with some questioning whether it was supposed to happen or not. Regardless, The Rockers did defend the championships on a few house shows before WWE reversed their decision and handed the straps back to The Hart Foundation.

It was a night that WWE erased from its history books, and a night that will be remembered as one where The Rockers almost won the WWE Tag Team Championships.

The Brain Busters End Demolitions Historic Reign

Demolition is one of the best tag teams to ever step foot into a WWE ring. Their look was exactly what it needed to be to strike fear into their opponents. They were an unstoppable force and held a stranglehold on the WWE Tag Team Championships for the majority of their run. Their most famous of which was a record-setting 478-day reign that stood for nearly 30 years.

During their record reign, Demolition bested every great tag team that they came into contact with. It was starting to look like they would hold onto the championships forever, until a fateful evening at Saturday Night’s Main Event.

In a best 2 out of 3 falls contest, The Brain Busters, comprised of Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard, cheated their way to victory over the champs. It was a shocking title change that had the fans shaking their heads in disbelief.

No one gave The Brain Busters much of a chance, especially on a show that didn’t have any championship changes to its name. It added an air of unpredictability to the event, which in turn gave it more selling power going forward.
