Brock Lesnar's WrestleMania 42 plans have been revealed, and it seems likely that the Beast will be taking on a babyface role at the Show of Shows. Lesnar made a shock return to WWE at SummerSlam in August and attacked John Cena before easily defeating the now-retired 17-time world champion at Wrestlepalooza.
Lesnar has been a heel since his return and competed in two matches, including his win over Cena. He also teamed up with The Vision and Drew McIntyre to defeat CM Punk, Cody Rhodes, Roman Reigns and The Usos in WarGames at Survivor Series.
The 48-year-old has continued to work on a part-time schedule and has made sporadic appearances on WWE RAW and SmackDown. He has appeared in the WrestleMania 42 advertisement, and his sole commercial for the PLE next April was released this week.
Lesnar looks set to face the man who retired Cena at Allegiant Stadium in Paradise, Nevada. Self Made Pro (via Last Word on Sports) reports that he is scheduled to face Gunther at Mania.
The original plan, as previously reported, was for him to go up against Bron Breakker, but plans have changed following Seth Rollins' injury. Breakker is now expected to face Punk for the World Heavyweight Championship in what will likely be a rematch, given a separate title match between the pair is booked for the RAW on Netflix debut (January 5th).
This will be the first time Lesnar and Gunther compete against one another, and it is a match many have been waiting to see ever since the Ring General arrived in WWE. An intriguing story could be built between the two heavyweights regarding the Austrian looking to make the former UFC champion tap out as he did to retire Cena.
If Lesnar faces Gunther at WrestleMania, it may lead to a face turn for the Beast Incarnate, as WWE will surely want to ensure the latter remains the company's biggest supervillain. He was mercilessly booed on WWE RAW last night in his first appearance since retiring Cena at Saturday Night's Main Event.
Lesnar is no stranger to working as a babyface, as he did so when colliding with Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 38. Some of his segments since returning in the summer have accidentally elicited funny responses from fans, including his jeans ripping and him falling over during an entrance.
The former Universal champion does pull off a good character who can turn destructive in the blink of an eye. It could be compelling to see Gunther try to deal with one of the best big men in WWE history.
Next year could be Lesnar's final year competing amid suggestions that he is set to call time on his career. The Ring General makes sense as his final opponent to follow up on retiring Cena and Goldberg, but that might not happen as early as Mania.
